I currently have 36 hours with a 4.0 at a local community college. I'm a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and have been on the President's List. Also, I'm being published in the next edition of my school's academic journal. I may be published in my school's literary journal before I graduate, as well; the Dean of Fine Arts and Humanities is my creative writing instructor and has suggested that I submit a story.

The problem is that I have 24 credits with a 0.25 from the 2008-2009 school year. I have documentation that I was treated for major depressive disorder between that time and the time I enrolled at my current school, but I realize that it may not be enough. I've retaken all the classes I could at my current school, but that leaves 3 hours with an F.

I expect excellent recommendations and my essays will definitely work in my favor. Will this, combined with what will hopefully be 57 hours with a 4.0 after this semester, be enough to get me into a great school?

I'm planning to apply to U Miami and Miami U right now, with Howard as a safety. I'd like to know what my chances are like at higher ranked schools and whether I should just aim for an honors program at a state school somewhere. Not my state (Arkansas), mind you, but somewhere.

I got 29 on the ACT and am a GED recipient. My plan is to double major in history and English, and minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. After that, I plan to go to grad school.

Any advice or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

Anyone? I’m totally out of my league here. A few people have told me I can aim for better schools, but I screwed up an entire two semesters. I’ll have an AA before I actually transfer, hopefully still with a 4.0, but that’s not gonna show up when I apply. Sooo… anything?

You’re going to have to check with individual schools to see how they’ll handle your early GPA credits. Even retakes don’t technically disappear so some schools may be more generous on those considerations than others. The rest of your resume sounds pretty solid though.

Any specific reason why you’re avoiding schools in AR? There are some pretty good options there and you’d be eligible for more scholarships/aid I would think. If you’re just needing a change of scenery and that’s the motivation for getting OOS, I can understand that for sure though.

Thanks. Yeah, I really picked the wrong time to finalize my choices and try to get info. Thing is, I’ve been talking to a few people lately who tell me I should try for some better schools. I know my record now is fine, but the old stuff is what worries me. I’m definitely going to be calling around come Monday, though.

I am applying to a couple of in-state schools as safeties, but I’d really rather go to school in a bigger city (preferably not a southern one). It’s going to come down to money in the end, but I hope between PTK and the federal aid I qualify for, I’ll have a chance to go somewhere I’ll actually enjoy.
