I feel like I sort of just threw up my resume more or less... I included what I thought was the most important stuff. Basically, I'm a huge music guy who favors math/science and am looking at Engineering or Computer Science. I love doing theatre and music and choir etc, and I am looking for that at the college I attend in addition to pursuing math/science further. My test scores and grades I don't feel reflect 100% of who I am - when something genuinely interests me I go way over the top in terms of work and quality.

I come from a nationally recognized school where the average number of AP classes taken per student is around 6+ at graduation. My essays talk about my piano experience and going to the state honors concert and the other one on the common app talks about going to Global Finals in DI and what that meant to me and what I learned.

Math and science are definitely my strong suits, and first quarter I got all A's with ease, because I am finally taking classes that legitimately interest me. Math makes sense to me.

If you need to know anything else, feel free. I'm not looking for people to shoot me down without reason. I know that I listed a lot of reach schools, and that's why this post is here. No point in being chanced on a safety!

Thanks!

Since your grades and test scores won’t make you stand out, make sure to submit an arts supplement with a CD of your playing! Even if you don’t want to be a music major, since you obviously have achieved so much with it and write about it, you need to let them listen for themselves to decide if they want you purely for the music.

However, be warned, that since you are applying to schools with top music programs as well (CMU, JHU, NU, etc.), they may not need another great pianist if they already have many who have devoted all of their time to piano and intend to pursue it as a major.

I’d say that the biggest reaches are CMU, JHU, NU, and WashU. The others you stand a better chance at.

Oh, I didn’t even know that was an option! That’s really helpful, thank you! But yeah, that’s the only small problem. Is it a realistic to hope that my less than perfect academics can be somewhat helped by my music? I mean, I like to get involved and do 2 or 3 activities and not just focus on what I’m majoring in.

The only problem (like you said) is that they are top schools for music as well, so who knows if I’d make a difference. I do know that I would have decent chances music-wise for getting into a school like CMU though, so it’s not just a fun activity.

But thanks again for the response!

Bumpity bump!
