For teacher essays, I plan to get teachers who I obviously have a close bond with, and my counselor and I are relatively close. I also plan to get additional recs from a U.S. state rep, and one from a former US army ranger. I think I should also be pretty fine in the interviews because I get interviewed a lot and I’m basically used to it. BTW: OWL is a club that teaches leadership skills and survival skills and is taught by a former army ranger.

Again, these are all relatively theoretical but I just want to know if I’m on the right track towards my goals!

P.S. sorry for my terrible grammar and writing, I kinda wrote this fast

I don’t know why you feel like you even have to ask. Yes you have competitive stats. Nail the essays.

Thanks

Great achievements and/or goals, but without a hook (EC’s aren’t hooks) you will amongst thousands of other applicants that have achieved the same, so make sure you have a broad list of targets, reach and safety schools that you would be happy at - and not just being happy at your reach schools.

what would be an example of a hook?

Theoretically roughly 8% chance.

Good luck!

Traditionally defined as a student that is a under represented minority, first generation college student, recruited athlete, legacy,

For the class of 2021, I think the low end was 3% and high end 11%

I see, thanks for your feedback, but I was hoping I could explain my rough childhood and How I almost commited suicide, but then rose up because of the problems I see with America as a whole. Whoo, that became edgy quickly. Btw im Asian so that probably would lower my chances

Keep doing your best and it will all work out - it’s not what school you attend, but what you do while you are there and then thereafter that counts.

Thanks again

What do you want to major in? Yes, Asian male seems to be an anti hook.

Depending on the school it could work in one’s favor. At many of the top liberal arts colleges, female applicants outnumber males by 10-20% despite the desire of the school wanting to achieve a 50/50 mix of admitted students. Of the Ivies, Brown is an ivy where the male acceptance rate is higher.

True, but he is asking about the Ivies.

Something doesn’t sound/smell right here. A sophomore isn’t eligible to be National Merit Semifinalist (not PSAT Semifinalist). And it’s called SAT Subject tests, not AP. There is no way you can get an 800 on APUSH/AP World.

OP, is everything you listed for real or are you making things up? Methinks the latter. Post again when you have ā€˜real’ stats/accomplishments.

You need some hook, I know a lot of people with that profile (asian) that didn’t get into any ivies, like not even waitlisted. if you’re stem, olympiads, intel contests, do them if you can, if social sciences/humanities, enter as many writing contests you can on you favorite subject and win or at least be a finalist. and yes the essay on your past issues will be key, that’s the only thing that will make you stand out right now. I don’t want to make light of your past, just saying that will really get their attention, admissions officers love struggle, parents who didn’t go to college things like that. Get arrested but not convicted around a cause, and claim you followed in the footsteps of Gandhi, Mandela, King, colleges eat that up

I’m sorry but writing about a suicide attempt/writing about the problems of America is not exactly a ā€œhookā€. I’d actually say to stray away from writing about suicide, as it may seem like a pity plea and also may seem as if your suicide attempt is your identity (I’m sure there are better qualities about you). I assume if you were diagnosed, there will be a medical letter from a counselor or something on your application explaining this anyway (correct me if I’m wrong), so I would write about something else. Stats are fine, but many people have similar stats to you. I’m also not sure if you have actually received these stats (saying you’ll get a 2350 is different than actually getting it), so I’d say you have an 8-10% chance (typically RD acceptance rate for ivies)

when did you take the SAT to have taken the old one and received a score out of 2400. I almost feel you were in 8th grade if this was true.

If these scores are from your sophomore year, I think you have a wonderful chance! Applying early decision or early action will raise your chances!

Thanks for all the comments, By the way, these stats are all theoretical and I mean that I want to achieve these goals for the future, so being a semi finalist as a sophomore is impossible but Im implying that’s what I want to achieve in the future. Also I put AP for the SAT 2’s by accident lols. @Hamurtle . But yes, I’m trying to aim for a liberal arts pathway @theloniusmonk
