Hi Guys,
I would greatly appreciate it if you guys can calculate my chances to Reed College, Macalester College, College of William and Mary, The George Washington University, Pitzer College, and Wake Forest University.
Weighted GPA: 3.43 /4
SAT: 1970 Reading 620 Math 620 Writing 730
I applied for programs in either English or History at all of the schools above. (Except for GWU, where I applied for International Affairs).
Thanks,
Myblues
Your sat score seems below or just in the middle 50% for most of those schools, and certainly your gpa is low. I’d say mostly reach/high match. Are you applying to less selective schools?
Reed: low reach
Macalester: low reach
William and Mary: high match
Pitzer: high match
Wake Forest: High match
Keep in mind this is only based on your test scores and GPA, liberal arts colleges especially, tend to care a lot about your ECs and essays, so if those are da bomb dot com, you should be fine.
Most of those colleges are “holistic,” and somewhat unpredictable in admissions. They are small enough to pay close attention to your letters of recommendation, essays, extracurricular activities, and level of demonstrated interest. They are not necessarily need-blind, either. Are you seeking any financial assistance? My son had slightly higher stats than you, with outstanding ECs and, presumably, recommendations. He was wait-listed at Reed and accepted at Pitzer. He didn’t apply to the others. Pitzer did not even offer him a subsidized Stafford loan (our EFC was fairly high, but not full-pay for Pitzer or Reed). We had visited Pitzer, and he met with a rep on his school’s campus. He traveled to meet a Reed admissions rep in Philadelphia.
He would have loved to attend Pitzer, but agreed that the price-tag was too high, and went elsewhere. Pitzer’s acceptance rate is actually lower than Reed’s, although it is not widely considered as prestigious.
I’m inclined to say that Reed and W & M are reaches; Pitzer is possible, depending on other qualifications; not sure about Macalester (high-match/low-reach, perhaps); Wake Forest probably a high-ish match.
I hope you have some safety and match schools because pretty much all of those schools are reaches. Your GPA is very low (those colleges generally want 3.6+) and your SAT scores, while not low, are not that high either. Assuming you wrote great essays (which will be important for those schools), here is how I rank them:
Davidson: High reach/almost impossible (<5% chance)
Macalester: Reach (10-15% chance)
C of W&M: Reach (15% chance or so)
GWU: High match (30% chance)
Pitzer College: no idea, not that familiar with it, but I know that it’s fairly selective
WFU: also not that familiar with it, but definitely a reach
Reed: more unpredictable and will depend on essays a lot, but a high match or low reach
Did you apply to any other schools? I don’t mean to dash your hopes or anything, but I’d be surprised if you got into more than one of those schools given what we know (maybe you have insane extracurriculars or amazing essays, which could help a lot). Another thing that could factor into admissions is your financial need. If you aren’t applying for financial aid, that will work in your favor (how much is hard to quantify, but it could be make or break, especially at a school like GWU).
@sailout, I have been accepted by all my early action schools, and these are my regular choices.
@Woogzmama and Zorlot, I am not seeking financial aid at any of these schools.
@Zorlot, These are just my reach schools, so don’t worry. For EC, I am president and founder of a music-related club, member of the school music honors society, write for the school political paper, interned at the biggest English-newspaper (I am an international student) in my hometown, and had been awarded several times by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
Also, I forgot to mention, I am a Canadian student currently living in Asia. Does this impact my chances?
Also, does it matter that my low GPA was caused by either science or math, and I’ve always maintained a high grade in the humanities?
The only school on your list that I am familiar with is WM. WM does not consider what major you applied for. Because of this, they consider grades from all classes with equal weight which unfortunately does not benefit you. Also WM is a state school so 2/3 of their students are Virginia residents. Being OOS is another disadvantage. However, WM prides itself on holistic admissions so you may still get in.
HI GUYS,
I just got all my results back. I was accepted by Wake Forest and Reed, and denied by Davidson, Wale Forest, W&M, GWU, and Pitzer. Thanks for all your insight. I think I’ll probably be headed to Reed.
Oops typo, just to clarify, wake forest accepted me.
