um.. ya one quick thing if you don't wanna read this let me just tell you my general worries. I took alot of regular classes in a school that offered many A.P's and that worries me because ppl tell me that schools tend to not pick you if you didn't take advantage of what was there but ya. and my other worry is that my junior college classes pretty much made up for all my a.p's in terms of raising my g.p.a and I dunno if this is a good thing so comments on that would be good thanks alot for reading this far that's very nice of you. Well I got one more part my E.C's and then you can tell me what you think.

hopefully I'll have a reletively good essay I'm thinking around an average on the essay so for the moment I just wanted to know my chances in these U.C's

With a UNDECIDED MAJOR

U.C...

Davis

THANKS ALOT!!!

arindian108:

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCB/UCLA: Super Reach
UCSD: Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Slight Reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Match

aridian108,

your problem, unfortunately, is that you don't understand how the UCs determine who gets into which schools, and therefore you aren't structuring the courses you take and the way you do your application to your best effect

While you seem to think that your GPA should be 3.939 because of all the junior college courses you've taken, but the way that the UC system will convert your scores is that they will assign you a UC GPA of 3.52 and then give you some nebulous credit for your junior college courses. Thus, this is the reason that flopsy (and I) believe you can only get into the three easiest Univ of California campuses out of the nine campuses that accept undergraduates.

Look at this link:

<a href="http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html</a></p>

and at this one:

<a href="http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2006/freshman_admit_profile_2006.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2006/freshman_admit_profile_2006.pdf</a></p>

If you'll notice, the computation of the UC GPA doesn't give you any credit at all for taking community college courses while in high school.

At this point you can either go to one of the UC campuses you get into--or you can wait another year or year and a half (after you have the equivalent of two years of community college credit)--and since you are getting about a 3.6 GPA in community college--you will be able to get into UCI, UCD, UCSB, UCSC, UCR, and UCM--and possibly into UCSD, UCLA, and UC Berkeley.

The advantage with this second approach is that they won't even look at your SAT scores if you go this route--which gives you a better chance at the last three schools I mentioned above.

Anyway, good luck--and write me personally (using the reply link below) if you have any questions.

P.S. In case I wasn't clear above--your chances as a freshman applicant:
Davis--Slight Reach
San Diego--Reach
Irvine--Slight Reach
Santa Cruz--Match
Berkeley--Reach
Santa Barbara --Slight Reach
Los Angeles --Reach

CSU's

San Jose--Match
Cal Poly--Slight Reach
San Francisco--Match

And your likely odds as a transfer applicant in a year or so:
Davis--Match
San Diego--Match to Slight Reach
Irvine--Match
Santa Cruz--Match
Berkeley--Slight Reach
Santa Barbara --Match
Los Angeles --Slight Reach

CSU's

San Jose--Match
Cal Poly--Match
San Francisco--Match

while the uc gpa is 3.52, someone with 3.52 and has taken a bunch of ap's will have a great advantage over someone who has taken no ap's and has 3.52

Hi Calcruzer,
Thanks for all the advice unfortunately from what I've gotten through my reasearch and asking people my G.P.A is somewhere between 3.9 and 3.56 it seems that many of my junior college scores actually do count on your g.p.a I've talked to a very well known source on this and she told me that most of my grades will be as they are except I might lose a few courses because I've reached the amount of so called honors college prep courses one can take high school. So it might not be a 3.9 but basically near that range. Thanks for the all the help.

The point I'm making is that they will count 4 year-long AP courses in computing the UC GPA (8 semester hours) and that's all--I got the UC 3.52 using this method.

Now it is true (as whoamg mentions) that they will look at all the CC courses and say--yes, this person took the toughest other courses possible--but they will not increase your UC GPA because of this. For this reason, you will not be competitive for UC Berkeley or UCLA for sure. You may be competitive for some of the others (UCSD, UCI, UCD, UCSB), but they are reaches. You will not be treated as 3.9--I don't care who is telling you that--they are wrong (I even had a UC Berkeley staff person make a statement like this once--only to then be corrected after I wrote to the admissions office at the school to complain that her comments didn't match up to the website and school policy statements).

The fact is: you have a better chance of MIT treating your scores as equivalent to a 3.9 than you do of the UCs treating them that way. The reason is that the UCs have to follow their own policies--set by the administration and central office of the President--and state-mandated policies--such as no affirmative action, easier admission for California residents, etc. MIT has no such administrative issues--and as a private college can modify the way they handle admissions on the fly.

I can believe someone might tell you that these will be treated as 3.9 In general, but not that they will tell you that they are treated as 3.9 by the UC Campuses. Perhaps there was a simple misunderstanding.

lol no man I don't think you got it right I've already talked to alot of ppl. I mean on my transcript it says 3.94 and this lady that works at our school career center is extremely intelligent and I know what she says must be true and she says as long as the class is u.c approved then it will go into the u.c's gpa I'm sorry man maybe comunnity colleges around your school don't do that stuff but diablo valley college is considered one of the best community colleges in the state and 20-30% of the kids that transfer from there end up in berkeley. Some people have told me dvc classes are looked at even higher then a.p's so I dunno where you're getting your information for but I'm trusting what these people tell me because I know they know what their talking about. Thanks anyways.

Okay, so now I'm understanding our differences here. You are telling me something different from what I originally understood--you are indicating that the community college comes to your school and teaches the class on-site as an honors class. In that case, the class will count as the equivalent of a high-school honors class and will go into the GPA. However, even in that case, the UCs will cap your honors courses at 8 semester hours--although the GPA will show on your transcript without that.

In this case, you are correct in saying that the course will be treated as part of the high school curriculum total--although it will only change your UC GPA by increasing the number of courses with As--not by increasing it by adding in these courses as 5.0 for both semesters. This would up your UC GPA to about 3.6 or 3.7--but still not to 3.9--despite what it may say on your transcript.

I'll contact the people I know and see if the UCs make exceptions for college courses in applying the cap on honors courses--but I doubt it.

Here's where I'm getting my information from:

<a href="http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html</a></p>

thanks for all the help so far, I dunno too much specifics on the courses that I took I can tell you that they aren't adminstered at the school but like my cp weighted gpa is 3.94 so like they do include those grades in, they do offer some dvc courses at our school and the stats and standards for these classes but I still don't really know specifics on anything honestly I'm still confused about the whole honors classes, junior colleges classes difference cause I thought in terms of gpa they did the same thing but I dunno, from what I know many of my friends applies to uc's and when there gpa was calculated it didn't include there j.c classes but at our school they do include them in so I really don't kno how this works I think the best thing for me to do I guess is just to wait it out and see what happens in the end thanks for the all the help though my application is a really wierd one I know I used to never get the classes I wanted so I would take them at the j.c and they were all u.c approved and then when I turned in the grade they did crazy things to my gpa so ya well, we'll see my intrest is more to get into a 7-year med. school then to get into a u.c cause I already want to be a doctor but thanks so much for the help if you find anymore information that's fine if not don't worry about it it's good enough man.

Well, we'll see. In any case, best of luck to you--both in your regular bachelors' program and in medical school. It's great that you already know what you really want to do--and that it really provides a great benefit to society.

Umm somebody previously said that the UC's don't consider community college courses taken in high school.

This is not true. They will take junior college courses taken in high school, and definitely ones taken during the summer. The links this person provided DO NOT show anywhere otherwise, and I'm not sure what they were thinking when saying this.

Final Results: Should've posted these earlier!!

Got into to:

UC Davis
UC San Diego
UC Riverside
Cal Poly
SF State
University of Missouri Kansas City Medical Program

I ended up going to UC Davis so I could just do med the normal way rather then doing it at a not that great of a school. However, the lady that did my final interview that got me in said I was an idiot in terms of grades but because i had dedication in my E.C's which were all verified she knew that I had a good chance and I guess I got in. Learning lesson is don't forget those E.C's they can get you into alot of good places.
