Subject 2s:

SAT II Bio:710
SAT II MathIIc: ??

Is math IIc a good one to take?

I plan on taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT as I'm pretty good at science and feel I'd do better on the ACT, I recently took the PSAT though, so I will decide for sure in December.

Extra Curricular:
-1 year JV Football
-100 Service Hours at Science Camp
-Play a lot of basketball (Though not on school team)
-Joined 6 clubs freshman year...(never go to the meetings though)

Major: No clue yet.

Other Info:
-I got to the 48 ranked public highscool out of the country.
-Lots of Asian population here in the Bay Area
-I'm an Indian citizen of America.

-I'm a guy.

Don't know if any of that matters, I'm just trying to figure out what I need to improve on before it's too late.

I'd really appreciate your help, thank you so much!

Good chances if you keep up your As in junior year.

Thanks for the reply! Anyother input? Ucb, UCLA,Stanford. (sorry for typos,on my pphone un shaky ca

Math IIC is a good subject to take, especially since you got an A in precalc. Also, it would be nice if you can give us a ballpark on your projected ACT/SAT score.

Weak EC's, and easy courseload.

Try to figure out your UC GPA, (10th-11th grade 8 semesters weighted).

And from there we will be able to see your chances. As of now, its pretty difficult to determine.

Do colleges have a preference between ACT and SAT?

At our school we couldn't take APs before Junior year.

Thanks everyone

Honestly, what UCs care most about are the numbers: grades, SAT scores, etc.
Do you know if you are in the top 4% of your school? If so, you'll be part of the UC ELC program. Berkeley accepts about 50% of ELC applicants and UCLA 60%, according to data from the class of 2008.

does your school not offer honors courses? do you know your projected rank? have you taken any practice SATs and if you what are your scores?

I agree with junshik that your course load SEEMS pretty easy, but if you're in the top 10% of your class in terms of course rigor then never mind. Your grades are excellent; if you keep those up and your SATs are 2100+ then I'd say you're a shoo-in at UCLA and Berkeley; like starryidsurprise says, UCs are extremely numbers-based. Stanford not so much - you'll have a hard time there because your ECs are pretty weak.

I'm not sure about preference, but I heard that UC's prefer the SAT over the ACT.

My school does offer honor courses but unfortunately, I never got into them and you kinda need to get into them early, talking junior high at my school it's hard to get in unless at the start. I'm not sure what my class rank is...

Regarding the SAT scores, my PSAT will be in by December, but like I said, I was planning to take the ACT. I enjoy science and the ACT seems to be more straight forward than the SAT. I read on the UC site I can send in my ACT + Writing in lieu of the SAT I.

My course load seems easy? I'm not too sure what else I could have added besides APUSH, but I really don't enjoy history at all. Thank you for the replies guys, I really appreciate it.

PS: Any recommendations for a good ACT prep book/software?

Thanks everyone.

Barron's is usually good. But from what I've heard, the science section on the ACT isn't really science. Like, it doesn't ask questions like "What is photosynthesis" or something; it gives you a scenario experiment and asks questions based on that, so you really don't have to be good at science in order to do well on that section. I'm really not sure about this myself, but people have told me that it's not so much difficult as tedious and they don't always finish in time.

It's just me, but I think that a difference of one point on the ACT is huge compared to the SAT. What if you really got a 34.44 but it counts only a 34? Haha I don't know it works.

So I should order Barrons then?

=]

Yeah, I think Barron's is good for everything. Definitely take the test your junior year; I know seniors who are taking their tests now are freaking out.

Alright. Barrons, here I come!

Well guys, I plan on getting a lot of service hours and getting further involved with my clubs. I will keep my grades high and will take some good classes next year (I do need an art class though...grad requirement). I want to shoot for Stanford...I plan on getting atleast a 30 on the ACT.
