So what are my chances with 30 on ACT and 3.9 GPA? I have taken 5 AP classes. I know there is a lot goes on in admission but just trying to get some ballpark understanding.

I'm not looking at highly selective schools such as Harvard, MIT etc with that score. But would be interested in Schools such as University of Penn, RICE, Cornell etc. Most of them have 75 percentile at 30-34. That means score of 30 would put you at 25-30% bracket. So that leads to, you gotta have some big hooks. I'm not sure how big of a hook. On the other hand the above schools also list 10-12% applicants in 24-29 range. I would imagine these are applicants with big hooks such as performing artists, athletes at state and national level.

There are a ton of top colleges (Top 30) on both the National and LAC lists where you would have a very good chance. The ones you mention are a little bit of a stretch, but just below them, and all over the LAC list are great schools you’ll qualify for.

To give you an example of a school where you’d be a very solid candidate, take a look at William & Mary. Admissions posts on their thread here and you have exactly the stats they’re looking for. Most of the LACs in the 10-20 range desire stats exactly like yours. You’d have a decent shot at Carleton, which is Top 10. Case Western and U of Rochester are good possibilities. Etc., etc.

Now, if you need merit money, that’s a whole different ballgame. But there are possibilities there as well.
