I’ve played baseball since I was 5, travel ball and school team(captain on JV and will be on Varsity this year), orchestra since 4th grade(first chair), over 100 hours of community service, Intel Science Club, National Honor Society, and Foreign Language Honor Society.

What are my chances as of now? (don’t know my SAT score yet)

Hard to tell w/o SAT scores. I would repost when you take them. Schools vary so much in quality that class rank and GPA can’t be used to judge by themselves.

okay thanks. Will do

I’m pretty sure you’ll be accepted even if you don’t take the SATs.

(Just in case you take that the wrong way, I’m kidding. You need to submit SAT scores. I’m just saying that your chances of admission into BU is really high.)

Oh wow thanks. That means a lot. I just wonder my chances at other top schools(but non-ivy’s)

There are a lot of top-notch colleges that you’ll have decent shot at (All depending on your SAT and SAT II scores at this point). What majors are you interested in?

I’m most interested in history or political science.

First off, you should take a step up from Boston University, and apply to Boston College. (BU ranking is around Top 50, BC ranking is around Top 30). And Georgetown University (Rank 22, might be a reach for you, but it’s possible if you work really hard) has a great political science program. You should do more research and see which schools are good for you, because your potential is a lot higher than BU.

And most importantly, good luck!

Wow, thanks for the great info!

Okay I got my SAT scores, they’re not the greatest b/c i didn’t study one bit to just see how I would do.
CR:590
Math:590
CW:580
I’m taking a prep class and will retake it.

I want some opinions about this, please share if you have some insight.

Opinions on admission likelihood? With a 1760 SAT, BC or any higher ranked school would be out of reach, despite your good GPA. At BU you would be in the bottom quartile of applicants so it would be a reach. You really need to work on getting better SAT scores.

Thank you and yes that’s what I was looking for. I know I need to work on my SAT scores.

What SAT scores do you think I would need to get for better chances? I know I can look at the percentiles and such, but I want some input from actual people.

Andy,

My suggestion is this…don’t concern yourself with what you “should” get on your SATs. You’re only a Junior, you have more time, and what you “should” get is irrelevant. Do your absolute best with those standardized tests and over the next year, research which schools work best for your interests and scores/GPA. Trust me, I am a senior in high school now and I used to worry about the same things you are now. It has all worked out thus far and I have received positive feedback from every school I applied to up until this point.

You’ll be perfectly fine. Just focus on kicking some butt in your last year and all will work out :)

Best of luck!

Thanks so much! That’s the best advice I’ve heard.

No problem
Best of luck.

Thanks b/c I’ve been stressing about my SAT/ACT so much b/c BU is my number 1

hey this is to andybatts,

i in no way am meaning to putdown the advice others have given you, and recognize all opinions can be helpful. in my mind though, i do NOT boston u. would be a “reach” for you AT ALL. i havent looked at all the posts here, but saw your SAT 1 scores. yes your original scores are at around the 25 percent mark of matriculating students (which is to say they’re around the 20 percent mark of currently admitted students), your grades are phenemonal, way better than the typical BU student. their website claims class of 2014 ADMITTED students, 60% of them were in top tenth, and you’re way past that.

bu is a low-end target school for you, in my mind, as long as you put a lot of effort in your app.

seems like you’re eager to go. show that to them, and -no promises- you’ll be there come this aug.

disagree personally w/ BC and Georgetown comment. both would be approproate “reaches” w/ your grades and extracurriculars

BU’s Class of 2014 Matriculating Profile (according to both College Board and Princeton Review):

Cr. Rdng 25 - 75% range: 580 - 670
Math: 600 - 700
Wrtng: 590 - 690

Portion in Top 10%ile: 57
25%ile: 88
50%ile (ie top half of hs class): 99

andybatts–

I’m also really interested in BU and you seem to be having a high chance of getting in, your SAT scores are okay, but I think retaking them will do a lot and probably boost you up into the BU range. I’ve heard and from talking to people that have been accepted that BU likes “diversity” and individuality and they see that most in your essays and recommendations so make sure those are AMAZING! All the academics is just to see if they fit their curriculum…thats one good thing about BU is that they do pay attention to academics but more on you and how you will contribute to the school.

Good Luck!
