In a Nutshell:

I am currently a freshman at a satellite campus of the University of Michigan, studying in the Honors program there. My GPA from last semester is 3.9 My high school GPA was 3.98. My composite score on the ACT is a 30. My goal is to transfer in the fall to a smallish, fairly prestigious school in Northeast, Mid-Atlantic region, or possibly the Southeast. I really, really want to get into William and Mary, and it is my top choice. However, I did apply to transfer for this semester and was turned down, although I was told that they normally only accept 0-12 transfer students mid-year.

Here is the problem: Even though my ACT composite is a 30 and I scored a 34 in English, a 35 in Reading, and a 27 in Science, Math is my weak spot and I only scored a 23 in math on the ACT. : ( I should have challenged myself more in high school, but I opted not to even take pre-calc, much less calculus or trig. At the time, I just didn't have such lofty aspirations, I guess, and I just wanted to take and easier math (business math, to be exact) so that I could focus on my stronger subjects.

Based on the above, do you think I have a chance at getting into a public Ivy League type of school or least one with an acceptance rate of 30% or lower? My GPA is very good, and it is in Honors courses which I hope will help, and my ACT composite is 96 percentile, in spite of my fairly low math score. I am currently taking college level Algebra to try to catch up on the math, since it's the only class I could test into. But I just know that there has to be a school like I want to attend that will overlook my math at least somewhat and focus on how well I have done in my better subjects, isn't there? I'm not remotely a math major, I am currently majoring in Environmental Studies and will probably switch to Environmental Science, so it's not like I want to be a math professor or anything.

Can anyone give me some hope or guide me to a school like I've described that would be a good fit and accept me? I would be especially happy if anyone could give me some hope of getting into William and Mary. Their admissions dept. told me to definitely re-apply for this fall, but the lady told me that the math would be a bit of a red flag...: (

Thanks!
