1) People still can get great education without going to “presitiougs schools” That’s not how things work in US. Sure it cwill give you better impression on your resume in society, but education is more than that.
2) People from “mediocre” undergraduate can go to “presitiougs” graduate school.
3) As an international student, applying to “prestigious” US colleges ONLY is nothing more than getting yourself in a bet with extremely low chance to win.

Then write an essay about why you like education and how you want to help them, and in what way you have contributed. Make a connection between your essay and ECs.

@Paul2752: Will do, but if I put my feet in his shoes…I’d expect the same thing from kids…I mean look at the amount of money he spent on me. He did so much for me, without a doubt, he is a great father but it comes down to this that I can bring him an honor nor can I please him with my SAT score. He literally says just bring over 2000 and my money would be refunded not flushed away (If you’re asian, you will get the reference I am trying to make).

@karanmit im sorry you’re in this position and even im an indian who live in india and I understand about your situation.even my dad wanted me to score 2000+ but i wasnt able to because of cr and I told him that’s the best I can do an I dont mind you not sending me to US but later he understood that it is much better to study in an top 50 universities in us rather than studying here and you have much more chance getting into ivy for post graduate if you study there rather than here

You are aiming too high. TBH you will not get into the Ivies you posted, you have a better chance at BU. You basically have no EC’s (something those top schools love to see) and unless you increase your SAT by 400 points, you won’t even be considered. Take the ACT to see if it helps but i doubt it will be any higher, you will need at least a 33 or above. Look at your state schools because your test scores and GPA for those schools will be lower than there minimums. On top of that, your class rigor isn’t up to par, as they look at kids with 10+ AP classes Your dad expects too much.Look for in state.

@karanmit i scored 1740 in my oct sat(m680,w550,cr510) and i took the november sat as well and i did better not
but not 2000+ but i will get around 1800+. I’m studying in lady andal school in chennai

You have to perform for yourself, even if your father is pressuring you to get into a “prestigious” university. Please consider looking at your strengths, because if you continue to “beat yourself up” with a negative attitude, it wont help your life. Your college essays ask about you, not your father. If you focus on your father’s needs, the essays won’t work or help you get into a university.

So, I have to be honest: your scores will not get you into those schools, no matter how hard you try, nor how much your father spends on tests and books. American students and students from other countries are constantly rejected from those schools-with higher scores and better qualifications. It is very common to be rejected because those schools only have a few spaces, and, they can’t accept everyone who wants to get in. Being international makes it even tougher. Remember that the US gets hundreds of thousands of applications from around the world for those few seats at those universities and then add the hundreds of thousands of students from the US. Everyone gets rejected!

Since your father appears to have money to spend on an American education, tell him what everyone here is telling you, apply to universities where you will be accepted.

You are not a failure if you don’t get into those elite schools. We have hundreds of thousands of US students who can’t get into those schools, are all of those students failures too?

@ind1900: Of course, I am applying to Indian universities.

@"aunt bea" : Of course, he doesn’t do that. Like any other parents, they too have expectations. I just keep failing to meet them - I pressure myself because my dream university was not Harvard or Yale, it was MIT, which I am not qualified for due to my poor performance on the SAT. If I had known about SAT even in 10th grade, I would have aced it.

@karanmit dont put a lot of pressure on yourself and even if you knew about sat dosent meen you’ll score 2200+ even I wish I took my sat in 11th garde not beacuse i can study more but beacuse I can retake it and do better i score 70 more in my nov than oct and it’s ok if you study in India you can definitely go abroad for post graduation and my aim is too improve my reading in the next 4 year since im already good in math for applying for pg and what are the colleges in India that you are applying too

America, not, as you assume, India, is known for land of opportunity. Yes, I do not neglect the education of India, and at some degree I advocate that the eduction is much tougher than that of American Universities, but its my desire to go to America and as far as scores are concerned I need to bring more than two-thousand, at least.

Whats pg?

IVY institutions in India? Like Ashoka University, IIT, NIT (my least preference), and Dhirubhai I and T University. You?

@karanmit i’m not into engineering so my choice of colleges in india are shriram college of commerce, christ college and loyola and I can assure you that if you have not started preparing for iit from 9th grade atleast you have literally no chance but i think if you work really hard maybe you can get into nit and I can assure you that studying in a top 50 college in us is much better than studying in colleges in india except iit and i hope you cross 2000 if not it’s ok there’s lot more to life than just this and pg stands for post-graduation which you do after undergraduation and even I want to go to US badly and I’ve started applying to colleges which are matches and my dream now is to go to penn state
