What are my chances

Hello, I am currently a Sophomore at a highschool. My colledge goals is to get into either CU Boalder or Colorado School of Mines. During my Freshmen year I had a 3.1 unweighted GPA and a 3.9 Weighted GPA. I took all honors and a.p classes during my freshmen year and now during my sophomore year im taking all honors and a.p and hope to continue this until senior year. I probably will make it to CU Boalder, there admission is easy, but my dream school Mines is a different story. They accept 36% of admissions and most of em are Unweighted 3.6. I was wondering whatvdo i have to do to make it into this school and since i kinda messed up in freshmen year ( only 1 A) did all my chances fail??

You’re a sophomore; you still have time to make up for your grades. I would suggest keeping your college search open, not to just two schools. Please, please, please study for the SAT/ACT. Don’t slack off on studying for your AP classes; I would recommend starting to study in about February or March. Make sure to check which grade levels your schools take into account for admission (for example, the University of California system only looks at 10-11th grade). What do you plan on majoring in? It’s okay to not know right now, many people apply undeclared to schools. When college application season comes senior year, remember to not procrastinate on your college essays, and make sure they get edited by a trustworthy friend or teacher (or multiple, but you don’t have to take all of their advice). I also recommend getting involved in extracurriculars now because you need to build up your resume with things such as athletics, community service, or work experience. Good luck and don’t give up!

Colleges will also pay attention to an upward trend in GPA, not only cumulative GPA over 4 years of HS. So if you improve your GPA over the following years then you will significantly improve your chances at School of Mines.
