What are my chances?

So in fs+sh years, I had a lot of issues from suicide thoughts, depressions, leaving home and etc. I was mostly focusing on csgo betting. I made around 40k but my grades were bad my 9th-grade GPA s1=2.8 s2=2.7, 10th s1=2.8125 s2=2.8095
11 s1=2.8519 s2=2.8182. My SAT score is 988 and Like I know I had a job to do but I didn’t care about school whatsoever cause CSGO was more important. There are 2 F’s along the way and a few D’s but I made the F up during summer school. Mostly B’s and a few A. I also do sport 4 yrs cross country and 4 yrs track and field.

Can you guys give me some insight, chances I have for colleges? My major is computer engineering hardware I’ve taken things apart put it back or make something out of it. I built my gaming computer for 600 runs like a charm. My top 5 are UCSD, SJSU, UCSC, CAL-POLY, and UCM.
.

Sorry to hear about your mental health issues. Your SAT score is low for an Engineering major but it looks like you have tried to turn things around so Kudos. What is your SAT breakdown?
Too be honest, your SAT score is very low for a prospective Engineering/CS applicant. Do you plan to retake?
For the UC’s you need a minimum UC GPA of 3.0 to apply to any UC School and even then, UC Merced may be your only option.

Calculate your CSU/UC GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

The UC’s and Cal States use the capped weighted UC GPA for admission decisions.

Just to give an idea of the UC admit rate based on the capped weighted UC GPA:
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.00-3.39

UCB/UCLA/UCSD: 1%
UCI/UCSB: 2%
UCD: 4%
UCSC: 18%
UCR: 38%
UCM: 67%

With your D’s and F’s, will you have at least the minimum a-g course requirements completed by end of Senior year?

If you do not have a C or above in the minimum a-g course requirements, then your application will not be considered.

The subject requirement::::

History/social science (“a”) – Two years, including one year of world history, cultures and historical geography and one year of U.S. history, or one-half year of U.S. history and one-half year of American government or civics.

English (“b”) – Four years of college preparatory English that integrates reading of classic and modern literature, frequent and regular writing, and practice listening and speaking.

Mathematics (“c”) –Three years of college-preparatory math, including or integrating the topics covered in elementary and advanced algebra and two- and three-dimensional geometry.

Laboratory science (“d”) – Two years of laboratory science providing fundamental knowledge in at least two of the three disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Language other than English (“e”) – Two years of the same language other than English or equivalent to the second level of high school instruction.

Visual and performing arts (“f”) – One year chosen from dance, music, theater or the visual arts.

College-preparatory elective (“g”) – One year chosen from the “a-f” courses beyond those used to satisfy the requirements above, or courses that have been approved solely in the elective area

I would say that all the schools you are looking at will be Reaches at this point.

Some the non-impacted Cal States may be an option. Below is how the Cal States admit so repost with your CSU/UC GPA and Eligibility index information.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
How Cal States admit:

The Cal states admit by major and eligibility index. They really only consider GPA/Test scores/Geographic location and HS course rigor. Other than Cal Poly SLO, your EC’s are not considered.

You need to calculate your CSU/UC GPA using grades from a-g course.

Not sure which courses are a-g and will give you extra honors points, then use this link by typing in your HS name?

https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/institution

Cal states and the majority of the UC’s use the capped weighted GPA.

Then calculate your Eligibility index:
If you took the Redesigned SAT:
(CSU capped weighted GPA X 800) + (SAT Evidence Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) + Math Score) = Eligibility Index

Eligibility index for ACT:
(CSU capped weighted GPA X 200) + (ACT Composite x10)= Eligibility Index

**CSULB and SJSU use a modified EI for STEM/Engineering majors:
http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/impactionresultsfreshmen/index.html

You will then be ranked based on EI and major and they accept from the top down until all spots are filled.

You will get priority at your local CSU which you can look up on this link. Local applicants usually require a lower EI to get an acceptance unless the program is highly impacted.

Impacted campuses/majors: https://www.calstate.edu/sas/documents/ImpactedProgramsMatrix.pdf

You should consider attending a community college and excelling in your academics so you can transfer into any of these target schools. As a Junior level transfer, your HS grades/test scores will not be considered so you can start with a clean slate.

For the UC’s, you can TAG to 6 of the 9 campuses and if you meet the TAG requirements you are guaranteed admission. This may be the best path for you to take.
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/guarantee/index.html

For the Cal States and AS-T or AT-T degree would help you in transferring to your choice CSU: https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/transfer/Pages/ccc-associate-degree-for-transfer.aspx

Best of luck and remember there are different pathways to get your goal.

@Gumbymom
My SAT break down is 480 math and 508 English, I will be graduating with a completed a-g courses. I have a D in Chinese 3 and one D for honor Biology the rest are C’s and above. What about playing sport in college because I have a good chance of making it into a D2/D3 school for Track and Field but I have yet to reach out to any of the coaches due to thinking that I have a low GPA and low test scores they schools won’t recruit me.
So here do you think coaches will recruit me cause of my low GPA and test score but are good in the sport?

A D in Honors Biology will not fulfill the Science requirement so do you have 2 other sciences you have taken?

Did you calculate your CSU/UC GPA?

If coaches were interested in you as a recruited athlete, they would have already contacted you since you are Senior. You can reach out to the coaches but I think your grades and test scores may be difficult for them to overcome (take this advice with a grain of salt since athletic recruiting is not my area of expertise). My son had a few of his HS classmates that started community college in their respective sports and eventually were recruited by a 4 year university. This might be an option.

At this point, you need to decide if you want to go to attempt to get recruited or not and pursue that pathway.

If you are just want to study computer engineering, then you need to redo your college list so you will have some options.

I think UC Merced might be possible but it is still slight Reach. I would focus on the Cal States non-impacted campuses which have Computer Engineering which leaves Bakersfield, East Bay and San Bernardino.

Just for a reality check, here is the Freshman profile for Cal Poly SLO and UC Merced.

SLO College of Engineering:

Average CP GPA (9-11): 4.16 and Average SAT: 1467
https://admissions.calpoly.edu/prospective/profile.html

UC Merced (overall averages):

Average CSU/UC GPA capped weighted: 3.65 and Average SAT: 1120
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/merced/freshman-profile/

I wish you the best and like I stated above there are many different pathways to get your ultimate goal. I personally think that the community college with UC TAG is an excellent way to get into a UC. It will give you time to work on getting competitive grades, work on your study habits, save you some money and you still come out with a UC degree.

If you can check all the a-g boxes with a C or better, a non impacted CSU is probably your best target. If not, a CC is probably your only ticket.

you may be able to get into a csu if you talk about your issues and the challenges you have faced in the essays, but i wouldn’t bother applying to any UC’s

@student0517: No essays are required nor can be submitted with the CSU application. No help there.

I’ve found OOS WUE schools like UNR a lot more willing to talk about extenuating circumstances than the CSUs but, it may be worth a shot.
