Thanks

You’ve got a great chance…good SAT scores and respectable GPA. You’ll have less competition coming from MA than if you were coming from NY or NJ. Your GPA will probably keep you out of the running for big money merit aid. UMD doesn’t really look at SAT II scores, but you’ll definately want to make sure to mention your scores in your app (you submit a “resume” as part of your application)–good stuff.

Do you think I have a chance at the Honors Program?

Possibly, but again, your GPA may hold you back a bit. If your non-A grades are early in your h.s. career, you have a better chance.

If not Honors, you have a fair chance at Scholars, which is what I’m in (4.3W 3.7UW 2100 SAT, in state). I also got merit aid.

Don’t let Honors/Scholars make your decision. As a current University Honors student, I can honestly say that the benefits I got from Honors were nothing compared to the opportunities that my major offered or that I sought as an undergraduate.

^ Exactly. Scholars/Honors offer great opportunities, but that doesn’t mean general admission doesn’t offer great opportunities too.

Do I have a shot?
I also have a 3.4 but I am from NJ.
Five honors and one AP including my senior year (I’m finishing my junior year now).
I know my GPA will come up a little bit but I don’t know if I can make the jump to an A.
I took the SAT’s twice and got a 1840 the second time, (670 CR, 570 M, 600 W) I just took them a third time and I think I did a lot better so hopefully that will come up.
I hold an editor position on my school newspaper, and have a big chance at becoming editor-in-chief next year.
I volunteer at the library by tutoring local kids, was in SADD for two years, and will be interning at my local assemblyman’s office this summer.
Any recommendations on what to do to increase my chances?
Thanks so much!

Shannon - Is that SAT score superscored?
I wouldn’t necessarily bet on admission, at least not for the fall semester. UMCP can be kind of unpredictable. I’m in-state, and I saw people with lower stats than you get in and people with higher stats get spring admission. Being OOS and from NJ doesn’t really help too much, but nothing about your stats counts you out. Your ECs are really great, and hopefully once you superscore your SAT after the third set of scores comes in it goes up.

No, that isn’t superscored. The first time I took the test I took it cold and then I took a Princeton Review course so everything went up, except for my writing which stayed the same.
Thanks for the input! Would you say it’s worth applying? I would definitely be applying for the fall, not the spring. I know it’s not a “target school” for me, but do I have a shot a fall admission?

It’s always worth applying, and I’d say you’d definitely have a shot at fall admission. Just to clarify, you don’t apply for spring admission - you apply for general admission and then the committee places you either in fall, spring with fall waitlist, spring without fall waitlist, or they reject you. You probably know this, but your chances at being admitted to UMCP dramatically increase if you apply priority (this year, the deadline to apply for that was Nov 1), so make sure you do that!

Okay thanks!
