Waiting on my early action decision letter.
I am nervous! But what do you think my chances are?
Be honest please!

GPA: 3.59
SAT: 1310/1600
1980/2400
EC's: Assistant manager School News Team
Student Council
National Math Honor Society
Health Occupation Students of America
70+ hours of volunteering (Church, Library, Hospital)

I also wrote in special circumstance: Coming to the US at the age of 9 from Asia, I don't know if that would help lol (My GPA is kinda low because I got C's in Spanish which is basically my third language -_-)

chances are good. Are you in-state?

Yeah I live in Georgia

One thing UGA looks at is the rigor of your HS schedule. Did you take AP or Honors classes?

My school does not offer honor classes
But yes I started taking AP classes last year (AP United States History)
This year I am taking AP Statistics and I’m also joint enrolled
taking a college class at my local state university

Is that your UGA calculated GPA?
My initial thoughts are that test scores are OK, GPA is low, and only 1 AP class is low but that depends on how that compares to what is offered at your school. I don’t think you would be outright rejected but maybe deferred to RD so that they can look at the whole picture including your special circumstances.

Test scores are only okay?
They’re higher than 75% of the 2014 class

Anyways, 3.59 is just the unweighted GPA given by my school.

And they do look at the whole picture this year. This year’s app is the first time they included top 5 extra curricular activities as well as special circumstances

your test scores are fine. Their avg SAT is 1830

your GPA is low for early action. You probably wont get in early. You might, but you have a good chance for regular!

According to the UGA admission blog:

"During Early Action, our focus is primarily on the academic side of things. There are a small group of students where we look more closely at other issues, and that is when a student has a conduct issue or they are on the borderline of being denied based upon their academics. At that point, we would look in greater detail at their overall situation to try and understand what occurred, and then determine if they should be admitted, deferred or denied. As you can guess, the students on the borderline of being denied based upon academics would just have a decision of either denial or defer (if we wanted to see even more information before a final decision).

It is only in our holistic review process in the January to March time period where we would really have enough time to look at everything in a applicant’s file. "

Also from the admissions blog:
" if an applicant is not in the mid-50% or higher in at least two of the areas, they should rethink applying EA".

The 3 areas are test scores, curriculum, and GPA. Your tests scores are in the mid 50%, your GPA is not. You said your school does not offer honor classes and you have only taken one AP and currently enrolled in one. What will matter is how many are offered and of that how many did you take.

Oh alright, that clarified things a bit!
