What are my different options for colleges in Illinois and surrounding states?

-31 on ACT (planning on taking SAT)
-GPA fluctuating between 3.6-4.0 throughout high school (fortunately more towards the higher end)
-Taken AP Language/Composition and AP US History, planning on taking AP Lit. and Biology
-In volleyball (2013-2014 MVP), planning on soccer
-Interested in medicine and pre-med in college
-Not too many clubs, competitions on transcript
-Volunteer at hospital

I like most of what I have accomplished in high school, but not taking clubs and other extracurricular activities too seriously (2-3 a year) is intimidating me a bit. I understand that colleges aren't only looking for "book worms" and also prefer to focus on extracurriculars. Anyone have an idea of how this would present itself to colleges, and which colleges would be interested within Illinois and surrounding states? Thanks you!

What career or major are you considering? That might make a difference. How far are you willing to go from Illinois?

I would like to major in Biology or Chemistry to pursue a career in a medical field. I don’t mind traveling out of Illinois to surrounding states, as well as to California and Texas. Any colleges come to mind?

Here are some reaches in the area (Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana):

 • U Chicago
 • Northwestern
 • Carleton
 • Grinnell
 • Notre Dame
 • Macalester

Matches:

 • UW-Madison
 • UIUC
 • Minnesota
 • St. Olaf
 • Purdue
 • IU
 • U of Iowa
 • Marquette
 • Beloit
 • Lawrence
 • Gustavus Adolphus

Safeties:

 • Cornell College
 • Other UW, UM and IU/PU system schools
 • DePaul
 • Hamline
 • NIU
 • UNI
 • Iowa State

There are plenty of good options…

@prezbucky- Thank you! I was also considering Loyola University, how well would my chances be there?

Did you try the Super Match college search tool on this site? It might help you define what type of school you’d prefer.

@dyiu- I did try it, but the results were a little too broad since they focused mostly on college life (unless Harvard and Yale are yearning for this transcript XD )

You would very likely get into Loyola.

I’d try maybe UChicago or Northwestern (true reaches, but you never know)… and maybe two among Carleton, Grinnell, Notre Dame and Macalester.

Then maybe pick two or three matches and one safety. Make sure you like the safety, can afford it, and would enjoy being at that school.

One thing that might be appealing to a Bears fan is this:

When the Bears are playing the Packers in Green Bay, they actually stay at the Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton.

I have grandparents in Appleton and we were having dinner at the hotel and ran into Dave Duerson, Neal Anderson and Singletary. Though I was a young boy and hated the Bears already (growing up in Wisconsin…), I thanked them for their autographs.

Anyway – Lawrence U is in Appleton.
