what are my odds of transferring into rice from uh?

If I get straight A's my whole freshman year and get really involved in campus activities will I still have a chance of getting in or do i have to be coming from a really good school?

when transferring does your high school transcript really factor into the decision?

my resume:
sat 1800 (plan to study and retake it this year, aiming for 2000)
act havent taken it but plan to take it
same with sat subject tests

my gpa will be 3.6 at the minimum, but I will probably get straight As

in high school:
3.1 gpa(yes I know it sucks I slacked off badly)
debate captain (4A city champion for LD)
newspaper editor in chief
student council
magnet
world affairs club president
science club
robotics club
band

at UH I plan to pursue these activities:
Forensics Society
student government
channel 6 television
student newspaper
metro volunteer program
council of ethnic organizations
activities funded board

also I have ap scores as well, but I think im not going to report them cause I only passed 3 out of like 12 tests that i took (i didnt study lolz)

its a long shot. your grades arent great. straight A’s at uh will help a little but not too much unless you drastically up the rest of your stats

The average SAT for a UG is a 2150-2200 or something like that. transfers will have to do better than that.

Your EC’s at UH probably will not make a huge difference as they will only be for a year, although they can never hurt

I had only a 29 act, came from a community college, and had little community service at all but got into Rice engr. It’s certainly possible. (do know that the rest of application was extremely solid though)

As for whether or not your high school transcript matters, that depends greatly on whether you transfer after 1 year or 2 years of college. The less college work you have, the more weight your high school work will hold in general. If your high school work is weak, you might want to be prepared to transfer after getting 50-60 hours of 3.8+ college work.

As always, make sure you get some super recommendations and write stellar essays. I get the feeling those things matter a lot to the people who handle transfer admission.

sweet thanks for the advice, I guess Ill spend 2 years at UH and try to do good there

I know someone from UH who transferred to Rice after her freshman year. The person had a 2000 sat score, and a 4.0 at UH, and managed to get in just fine. I don’t know her high school stats. She worked really hard on her essays, spent like 5 months on them. The main question is WHY DO YOU WANT TO GO TO RICE? (if you are able to convince the adcoms that you have a legit reason for wanting to attend Rice, it will GREATLY help your chances of admission)

^^^That and the “What will you add to the diversity of Rice” essay. I applied to Rice as a freshman but wasn’t accepted. I’m hoping to transfer from UH, too. I’m taking all Honors classes, so I’m kind of worried about keeping a 4.0, but then again I’m used to a pretty heavy workload from high school. You might want to look at this thread, too.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/rice-university/949657-officail-rice-tranfer-thread-fall-2011-a.html</a>

The main reasons I want to transfer are the diversity for the small size, residential colleges, and they have a better program for people going into space-related fields. Should I talk about that in the essay, or do you think that seems too generic? (I’m going to be participating with the Rice Muslim Student Association as well as the UH Muslim Student Association, so hopefully being at Rice once a week will give me more insight and help me write better essays “from the heart”.)

@Robertrulez, would you mind me posting my stats here? I’m not trying to hijack your thread or anything.

@ simplyjuil

I choose on MOST of my short answers to give replies that very clear, professional, HONEST, and informative. The max word requirement kinda led me to believe that Rice preferred the questions to be answered with a clear, focused, and concise response. I did not believe that there was much room for fluff, so other than my voice the responses were generic in a sense.

The exception was on my “what will I add” and the “why rice” responses. On these I injected all my humor, heart, and voice. I’m quite confident they stood out.

I’m not saying what I did was best, I’m just saying it worked for me. I don’t think you should try to make every single reply and sentence completely original and unique. It’s okay to mention things like small size and residential colleges etc. but by all means, don’t make your main essay sounds just like the thousands of others they receive.

If I had to give advice for essays I would tell you; how you write about something can be more important than what you write about. And think different. You need to stand out.

@cb21990

Thanks for that, I really appreciate it! I’m pretty sure my essays were the reason I didn’t get into Rice to begin with. I’m bad at making myself stand out through writing (I’m more of an analytical writer), but I think I am a lot more prepared on what to expect this time around. I really am a very unique person, and I’m going to spend a lot of time on my “fluff” essays until they show it. On the “What will you add to Rice” essay, I talked about being Muslim and having a diverse background and how I would add open-mindedness, but now that I look back on it I feel like I talked too much about ethnic diversity and not enough about myself as a unique individual, regardless of religion/race. I hope I make good friends at UH to help me perfect my essays when the time comes.

^ thats a good point. More often that not, it seems we get caught up talking about issues more than ourselves.

Out of curiosity, can you redo an essay and send it in again for transfer apps? or does the essay need to be brand new?

I’m guessing you can redo it and send it again, but I think I’m going to start from scratch. I might write a few essays in the coming month and choose the best.

^^ What? Sorry but this doesn’t make sense. Are you trying to say you want to transfer to Rice for the diversity? If so, then that is NOT a valid reason to transfer to Rice, because UH is more diverse than Rice (look at college board)

Sorry if this comes out sounding rude, but if you can’t manage a 3.8+ at UH honors college, and if you somehow manage to get into Rice as a transfer student, good luck trying to keep your gpa up at Rice.

Nope, that’s not what I meant at all. I’ve been to UH, and at orientation alone I knew it is VERY diverse, I can only imagine once classes start. UH has 37,000+ students, much, much more than Rice, but Rice is very diverse for its small size, and I like smaller schools. That’s what I mean. I hope to maintain a 4.0 GPA taking Honors classes, but some current sophomores in the Honors College made it sound improbable. However, I don’t know what they were used to in high school. I took all advanced classes in high school, with two electives in two years, so I’m very used to a heavy workload, and maintained a 4.0 GPA. I’ll be frank, Colleges00701, you kind of did sound rude. I was also Salutatorian of my high school class. That may not mean much to you, but you didn’t go to my school. I’m the type of person who will do my utmost to excel wherever I go. :)

^^ Now that I read that post, I feel like the ending remarks sound rude on my part. Sorry Colleges00701, I did not mean to sound rude. It’s really hard to portray your attitude when typing and not speaking, and it can be taken many ways, lol. I didn’t mean it in a rude way at all, and you probably didn’t either. :)

@simply of course you can post your stats, we should be friends… we both have the same aspirations, im not going to be in the honors college though because frankly i did not want to jeaopardize my gpa, i want to push my focus on both academics and ecs, not just aca!

thanks for all the advice guys, im going to straighten up and take things seriously, this is my one chance to start over from scratch

@robertrulez We should definitely be friends! :)

I will be a freshman at The University of Houston and in the Honors College for Fall 2010/Spring 2011

I am a Hispanic, Turkish, Muslim, Female. (I don’t know if that really matters… ha ha)

I was Salutatorian of my class of 364 in my high school in Texarkana, Texas.

I have a 4.0 Unweighted GPA

I was President of the Science Club, Statistics Club, Music Theory Club, and Calculus Club, on the Math and Science UIL team, and in NHS.

I had a 30 composite on my ACT, and will I am hoping to retake the ACT in September.
AP test scores:
(Junior year)
English Lang. and Comp- 3
US History- 3
(Senior year-- of course, didn’t matter on my application for a freshman in Fall 2010 since I hadn’t taken them)
English Lit. and Comp- 4
Calculus AB- 5

I am also hoping to do a lot better in college, especially EC wise. I’m going to be in the Honors College at the University of Houston and take all Honors classes, plan to be in the Muslim Student Association, Hispanic Student Association, Honors Jazz Band (and symphonic band, if the practice schedule doesn’t conflict with my other activities), play intramural or club soccer, be in the Houston Astronomical Society, and if I am accepted, the Houston- Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (H-LSAMP). I also am hoping to volunteer at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences on Fridays, since I will only have one class those days. I don’t know if all of that will work out, because I know I most likely won’t have enough time to do all of those things, but hopefully most will work out. Also, my essays for Fall 2010 admittance were not the best, though they weren’t pitiful, and I hope to spend more time and do a much better job on them this time.
