Hello!
I am currently a Junior in high school and up to this point, excluding PE and having attended summer school for a D in English Freshman year, my GPA is 3.15. My Sophomore year GPA without PE is a 3.5. I have taken no honors or AP classes and this year I am likely to receive a 4.0 both semesters.
I recently moved to the school I’m currently at and this is the second year of the school being opened and the first year where Juniors and Seniors have attended the school. As a result of this, the APs I was planning to take are not yet available and I’m not in any honors or AP classes.
I plan to be a part of Mock Trial, Debate (Where I am currently Publicist), QSA (Queer Straight Alliance), and Interact for this year and next year. This Spring and next Spring I am planning to play Boys Volleyball or Track. I plan to take the leadership class and obtain a leadership position for next year.
I’m currently studying for the SAT, which I will take in December and again in January. When I took the PSAT in my Sophomore year I received a score of 167(1670 on 2400 scale) so I know that I need to spend a large amount of time preparing.
UC Berkeley is basically my dream school but I’m starting to look more at San Jose State.
Thanks to anyone taking the time to read through this and analyze my chances.
Average UC GPA for UC Berkeley last year was 4.19 and SAT of 2094. Since you are a Junior, even a 4.0 this year will not get your GPA up high enough to be competitive for UCB. SJSU is far more likely. SJSU like all the other Cal states (except SLO) use an eligibility index (EI) to rank applicants for each major. They also are the only Cal State that publishes their EI for each major each year.
First calculate your UC GPA/CSU GPA at the end of Junior year using only 10-11th grades for your a-g courses.
Would taking AP class next year influence acceptance decisions at all? Also, I just put it in the main post but I am planning to be a part of Assisted Student Body next year. I would also like to know the possibility of other UCs, if possible.
Senior grades are included in the GPA calculation but they will help your HS rigor.
Your best chances based on GPA would be UC Merced (Avg UC GPA 3.67) and UC Riverside (UC GPA 3.78). UC’s are very GPA focused. If you can bump up you GPA into the 3.4-3.7 range and get an SAT score around 1700+, these would be your best chance.
You should also consider some good Cal states such as Sac State, Chico State, Sonoma, Cal Poly Pomona to name a few.
Correction: In Post #4 I meant to say Senior grades are NOT included in the GPA calculation but AP classes will help with your HS course rigor. Psychology is a very popular major at all schools so your best chances are at the Cal states and UCR/UCM.
I assumed that’s what you meant when I read it. UC Riverside and UC Merced are inconvenient for me location wise so I’m looking at SJSU for the most part. If I continue with the plan I stated in my original post about ECs and with my academics, do I have a good outlook for SJSU?
