What are some safe apartments in the UT area?

I'm thinking about living in an apartment next year, but I've heard bad things about Riverside and West Campus. I'm looking for somewhere that's relatively quiet and has a low crime rate -- any suggestions? It doesn't have to be within walking distance, but I'd prefer something relatively close to campus.

You could live in North Campus. It is a bit far, but it’s relatively quiet.

West Campus isn’t that bad. Yes, there are times where there will be firetrucks coming to J26 (if you’re near that area like me), but it’s relatively quiet and safe. I’ve never felt unsafe walking at night on 26th Street or down Guadelupe. It’s just the price you’re willing to pay you should be worried about, because Apartments near campus are expensive!

I’m a girl and I feel safe walking around Guadelupe and West Campus at night where it’s lit up. But I definitely don’t think it’s very quiet.

Agree with tori. The only thing you have to worry about are the bums and scientologists.

Also, drunks. But most of the time their harmless.

Well it isn’t quiet per se, but it’s definitely not that rowdy like I expected. There are WAY too many bums on Guadelupe. I see the guys that play the guitar by Mellow Mushroom all the time. But it’s all good in the end.

I don’t really think West Campus is right for me, either way.

It’s…an adventure to live in West Campus. Never know what you might find!

Another area you might want to consider is near MoPac and Far West. There is a UT shuttle that has about 5 stops in that area. It is much calmer than the West Campus or Riverside areas. Most of the students in those apartments are upperclassmen and grad students. The apartments are older and not as nice as the ones on West Campus, but sooo quiet that it may be a good trade-off for you. Most of the rest of the Far West area is single-family homes. There is also an HEB, the Jewish Community Center, 3 or 4 churches, and several restaurants.

Is West Campus really THAT wild? I mean, is it something that affects your day-to-day life if you live in the area? I’m looking at a place just two blocks away but if it’s really that loud, maybe I should look in North Campus…

buriedalie - No, West Campus is not that wild. It might a little rowdy on weekends, but I never thought it affected my day to day life. It might be loud if you’re like right next to a frat/sororiety house, though. And just a FYI, any apartment/condo two blocks away from campus is going to cost you a lot.

Yes, I’ve looked at that. It’s actually surprisingly cheap - it’s an older condo (which I don’t mind)… I’ll keep you updated. :P

What did you find, buriedalie? I like westcampus and i feel safe (im a girl). It’s a little loud sometimes but that’s what you get for convenience even if the price isnt so nice. But just as a side note, DO NOT LIVE AT J26!

I live at Vintage, which is in West Campus, and I feel pretty safe. I still take precautions in West Campus, like watching my surroundings and remembering to take out my pepperspray if it’s that late, but I generally have had no bad experiences in WC. The ONLY times I felt unsafe were two times I had to walk out at 6 a.m. and it was pitch dark, poor lighting, and I had scary encounters with two homeless men. Fortunately it was behind the co-op so I powerwalked my way on to Guadalupe and I was fine after that. Just be street-smart, especially if you are a girl.

msolo - it’s a condo at about 22nd and Nueces at a complex called Nueces Place. It looks nice enough.

Oh, and what’s so bad about J26?
