What are the chances of getting a full ride to the University of Michigan?

Hello,

I am currently approaching the end of my sophomore year. I attend a private school if that adds any type of benefit to my application. I am currently ranked 2nd out of approximately 160-170 other individuals in my class. I will most likely be passed next year based on the fact that I failed to take an extra AP class freshman year (rank is based on GPA, GPA is based on AP/Honors class bonus). The University of Michigan is my dream school, but I would not like to burden my parents with the cost of attending.

Here is a little about me:

4.252 GPA end of Sophomore Year (4.0 unweighted)
4.65 GPA projected by senior year (4.0 unweighted) if I receive all A’s and A+'s
National Honor’s Society
Nearly 100 service hours
Captain of Varsity sport by senior year
Participated in 2 other sports
Student council 2/3 years so far
Model UN 3 years
Have not taken ACT or SAT yet

I am not sure if this information is sufficient enough to really predict my changes of receiving a full ride but any advice or information would be beneficial. Also any advice regarding ways to make my application more appealing or to make myself a better candidate for a full ride would help. Thank you!

Forgot to include courses:

Freshman year: Honors Math, Honors English, Honors Science, Spanish I in addition to required courses
Sophomore year: Honors Math, Honors English, Honors Science, AP World History, Spanish II, required courses
Junior Year: Honors Math, AP Lang, AP Physics, AP US history, AP Psychology, Spanish III, required courses
Senior year: AP Calc, AP English, AP Science (bio or chem), AP Gov, AP Computer Science, Honors Spanish, required courses

Honors and AP GPA bonus is the same

You are a competitive applicant. Your stats and ECs are good. Write great essays and you could get accepted to UMich

Your chances of a full ride are not good because no one’s chances are that good. The just aren’t that many full rides out there.

Anyone chancing you right now has no idea what they are talking about. Chancing is hardly a science, and it is way too early to even attempt to make a prediction even for just admission given you have no ACT/SAT scores.

Regardless, a full ride (by merit-based scholarships) is highly unlikely at Michigan.

As for if the type of high school you attend effects your odds of getting in/ getting a scholarship: Merely being a private school will not necessarily help, but look at the graduating class to see where they are going. If there is a high number of them that are going to top universities, this may indicate that the school you attend has a good reputation and is known for its good academics.

Just my 2 cents though,

“Chance me” for full ride?? Not sure if anyone on CC can give you an answer. It’s a really really tall order, especially for colleges like UM.

As Yikes x3 said… Way to early to give an opinion. But since you have time there are several full ride scholarships to look into that are outside of Michigan’s scholarships. Your school counselor and Michigan can help you find those. You can also do a search yourself.

My son’s knows kids that got the Stamps and Posse. Gates foundation and there’s a Cooke one also. I think a lot of these are minority driven.

Are you a resident of Michigan, or are you OOS? The way things are going, the admit rate for OOS applicants will drop to under 10% in three years. Out of the 1,000 OOS freshmen who enroll with perfect 4.0 GPAs and SAT/ACT in the 1530-1600/34-36 range, only 50 or so receive full rides. That’s 5%. The odds are just not good.

Can you play football or basketball at a level where you can get recruited? Pretty much the easiest way to get a full ride to a college that has perfect stat students that apply and get rejected.

My daughter’s classmate received a scholarship of $15,000 a year for having a perfect ACT score (not sure if his high grades factor into that too, he was top 5 in the class). He does not have a full ride with free room and board. You need to do very well on the SAT or ACT and you may have a shot at some good merit aid at Michigan.

Does Michigan even have full ride scholarships (other than sports)? Maybe some outside angencies but then they usually have a financial need component.

Hello, I am currently a undergraduate student at the University of Michigan. You will be able to gauge more your chances of being accepted into the University of Michigan after you have taken your SAT or ACT. Getting aid and scholarships comes down to more of a need based thing, the university for most people meets 100% of need based aid. That means they will pay for your expenses up to your EFC (expected family contribution) from your FAFSA. There are many more need-based scholarships at the University than merit-based scholarships, but there are some if you don’t have financial need. I dont know if it is different for those applying from out of state or from even out of country, but I would say, from my perspective, given your GPA and academic class choices you would be a solid applicant for the University of Michigan.
