I can’t chance your DS but certainly their stats are competitive. Definitely apply EA (Nov 1 deadline). https://myillini.illinois.edu/Programs/MajorDetail/10KP0112BS (not sure this is data for 2018 or 2019 freshmen).

Here are some outcomes data, as well as the absolute number of undergrads studying CS.

Good luck.

He’ll be a competitive candidate, and being in-state definitely helps him. Has he taken any CS classes, and are any of his ECs CS-related? Those would be the weak spots, if any in his application. I don’t think they will affect him too much because UIUC values GPA and rigor over ECs. Having those or not could make a difference at other CS-competitive colleges, however.

Your DS has some very competitive stats that definitely put him in the running. I would make sure he really focuses on his passion for CS in his essay to put the icing on the cake. Admissions to CS is a crapshoot for even the best qualified, such as your DS, so stand out with the essay. Best of Luck!

@Groundwork2022 Thanks for your response. He has some ECs but are not too strong. ex. he did not have a job in SW firm over the summer. He did a 1 week internship at a local big software company and apart from that his research over summer has been in a lab where the exp was mostly related to Bio-medical. Also what do you mean by Rigor in terms of course work ?

rigor = taking difficult classes and/or the highest levels of classes offered (particularly those related to your major)

Thank you.

I think it is a good target major, but obviously CS-Engineering is very competitive. Definitely pick a second major, a backup safety school or both of course.
