UIUC Chances-General and CS

3.2 UW GPA
2310 SAT 720R 790M 800W
800 on Math 2 680 on Physics
Out of State
11 AP Courses in high school (:P)

I have a very strong extracurricular backing, speicfically in regards to computer science related fields, I have won numerous local hackathons, worked in web design for a local clothing company, along with other things such as robotics, editor of school scientific journal, varsity/state level tennis player etc.

I think my chances for getting into CS are low but how about my chances just for DGS?

The unweighted GPA needs to be explained, if possible, on the app. Do you have an upward GPA trend? You mention 11 AP courses. How were your grades in them? Did you take AP Calc? If so, how’d you do? I’d say you’ll likely get an offer for DGS, if you are rejected from CS. But you should apply to CS directly. If denied, you are automatically considered for DGS.

Yes that is what I am doing since I already submitted my app (Priority honors)
The AP’s I took are Calc AB(4) Lang(4) Bio(3) Chem(3) CS(5) APES(4) APUSH(5) Physics(in progress) Macro(in progress) micro(in progress) Stats(in progress)

My trend is slightly upward and even if i don’t get into CS I don’t mind too much, although I am very passioante about the field and will likely attend DGS then try to get into cs after sophomore year if I dont get in directly.

Good attitude. You can take the same classes as people who get directly into CS, if you are denied, and offered a spot in DGS where you’ll be able to show them what you’ve got. No guarantees, however. It’s a tough transfer, but still very possible. Good luck.

Not so sure about CS with your GPA. I had a 3.45 UW and similar standardized test scores and ECs and I was offered my second choice of EE instead of CS. Admissions has only gotten harder since I was admitted. Id suggest applying CS with second choice of CE, since theyre VERY close, and you will be able to have priority registration in classes you need to transfer (if you want to transfer at all). Otherwise you’ll have a very hard time finding a slot in the class since you can only register after the CS, CE and EE students register. You’d have to get above a 3.6 GPA with As in CS courses (125, 173, 225), with strong math grades too. CS is very competitive here.

Apps are already closed, but just for future reference Illinois no longer allows CE as a second choice major for CS or vice versa when applying.

Hard to say how much weight is attached to GPA vs test scores. I think in many case a very high SAT/ACT can make up for a low GPA, but probably not for the most selective majors.

With all the talk of less apps being submitted (due to the removal of EA), how do my chances now stand for CS? Also, can I consider my chances to get into UIUC overall (as in DGS) high?

Not to be discouraging, but I think CS is so popular that it will be as competitive as ever. Maybe slightly less competitive ‘than it would have been’, but still more competitive than last year. Really this is just guess work.

I’m not really sure how much weight the ECs carry. Did you put one if the new CS+X majors as second choice?

Yes my second major is CS + linguistics. It’s totally reasonable to say that I won’t be able to get into CS but if I go to UIUC for DGS, how difficult is it to get into CS through that route and how would i go upon doing that?

There is a set process for internal transfers. Sorry, on phone and don’t have the link handy. It is extremely competitive. If your heart is set on CS, it is kinda risky. You never know how the transition to college life will go, and you can’t afford any bad grades if you want to transfer (a B in a CS class is a “bad” grade for transfer candidates).

OK I will definitely take that into account; I know my current GPA may not reflect positively on me but I am dedicated to work hard and get top marks in college. Would you say my chance to get into DGS is high?

bump

Transferring in to CS in Engineering is nearly impossible.

Declaring for one of the CS+X programs in CAS just requires an easily reachable GPA (3.2, I believe).
