I’ve been doing some research about honors program from different colleges website, but I’m still a little confused. I know every college is different, but normally, what are the differences between “honors program” and regular college?
I know one difference is that there is “honors housing” for students who are in the honors program.
I read that they have smaller classes, does it mean all the honors students take their classes separately from other students?
As you said, it varies a lot from school to school. Sometimes there will be actual honors sections of courses in which the same material will be presented as in the non-honors section, but with a greater depth and level of abstraction. Sometimes courses will involve an honors project within a given course that will involve some type of research project on top of the standard requirements of the course.
I can’t speak about the honors programs at those specific schools but I am in the Honors program at UConn. Here are a list of some of the ‘perks’ or benefits associated with being an honors students.
Perks:
Honors Housing
Honors Courses (small class sizes and more rigorous material)
Priority course registration and housing pick times
Research Assistant positions
Merit Scholarships and academic research funding
Honors exclusive guest lectures and events
Access to courses at the Graduate School
Honors Thesis
Priority advising and registration seems to be very common among Honors Colleges/Programs and (to me) is by far one of the most important parts of being in the Honors College at my school. You really can’t oversell the value of being able to register for a class with 30 seats 2-3 weeks ahead of hundreds (or thousands) of other students.
