To anyone who goes to school there now or has a really good idea about the students at NYU, I was wondering what vibe you generally get from them, meaning have you found they are happy to be there, jaded, too competitive, helpful ect.
Thanks a lot!

Jaded. Snarky. Pretentious. Worldwise, i.e. full of themselves at too young an age.

There’s a ton that could be said negatively about the school, but you can find good people. It’s hard though, because by in large people won’t give you the time of day if they don’t know you.

I’ll give you the time of day! lol :P

this doesn’t describe my D or any of her friends at NYU!

But, NYU is like NYC – big and busy, so no, people are not necessarily going to be overtly friendly to people they don’t know. Not out of meanness or pretentiousness, but because if they were, they’d spend all day smiling and being friendly to the multitudes…

It helps when you come to NYU if you have some degree of self-sufficiency. It’s not a school where you can wander into the dining hall, the campus center, or a green and know that you’ll find someone familiar to talk to. So, it does take more initiative and planning to have your social life and be with people (outside of the ones who live right with you; but even that, planning to meet for meals is necessary if you don’t want to eat alone.)

I should amend that – if you live in a dorm with a dining hall in it, I suppose what I said above might not be true; i’m not sure.

hellodocks pretty much got it right. A lot of students here develop an attitude of self-entitlement, pretension, and snobbery because they think they’re so mature and awesome now that they live in New York City. It’s all complete naivete. College students are college students, whether in New York or not.

That said, the school is so large that you’ll be able to find some awesome, intelligent, down-to-earth friends who aren’t of that “fake” character.

A lot of hipsters and then there are some really awesome people. I have met several of my daughters friends and she has made a few that will probably last forever.
