What are the top colleges in NJ?

I'm a New Jersey resident and I've resigned myself to the fact that I can only really afford to go to school in-state. What colleges do those who don't live in NJ recognize as respectable and good universities in Jersey? Obviously Princeton, but what else?

Rutgers University

The College of New Jersey

Its a selective school that offers many of the benefits of a smaller, private, education but at the cost of a public school. Seems like it could be perfect for you.

Agreed with TCNJ, but it’s not really known out-of-state. The state college with the best name recognition is by far Rutgers, but my personal opinion is that TCNJ is slightly superior academically.

Those I already figured but I’m looking for a school with a good business program and TCNJ lacks that. Also, I personally just am not a big fan of Rutgers. What about Montclair or Rowan?

Rutgers is obviously the best known. TCNJ is less well known, but is more selective, and its reputation is growing.

I wouldn’t rule out TCNJ because of its business school, as it actually ranks pretty well.

I think of Rowan as the next best public school in NJ, followed by Montclair State.

Although it’s not Wharton or anything, TCNJ’s business program is ranked by Forbes (number 65, a bit higher than Rutgers) while I don’t see Montclair or Rowan even on the list.

Just wondering why do you have to stay in NJ? Private schools are likely to give you a lot of financial aid if you need it all over the country.

Princeton, TCNJ, Rutgers are the best nj have to offer. If you dont like those choices look at Rowan, Montclair, and Rider.

Princeton is the only school with a national reputation. Stevens and Rutgers are decent regional schools. I’m pretty sure everything else is going to be very local.

Where do you want to go after college? One nice thing about being in NJ is that you’re close to two major Metro areas–NYC and Philadelphia. You’ll find graduates of NJ schools in both cities and have a good alumni network from Rutgers, TCNJ, Rowan, or Montclair. I think Rutgers has the best reputation and gives you the most options. TCNJ is an excellent school but seems to have a lower profile-I’m in NJ and am embarassed to say that I had never heard of it until I started looking at colleges with my daughter in mind. (Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have gotten in back when I was applying.) Rowan seems like it’s on the rise, they just got a huge gift/donation and are building new building and adding grad schools. Rowan seems slightly more residential than Montclair, and I think draws some kids from Philly instead of just NJ. Rowan seems interesting to me because they have a great music program, education program, and engineering program–which sounds like a good mix of people. Montclair is supposed to be great for the arts and has close proximity to NYC. Have you visited anywhere?

Although I am not in the business school, I feel Rutgers is improving its business program. For instance, the whole Livingston campus is being planned and projected as the business school center. Just look how much renovation they are doing at Livingston, future home of the business school.
