what are the WORST "literary and famous" books?

uck, fart of darkness

The Chosen

The Chosen only makes sense if you are Jewish...and I'm really suprised at how much I love Beloved.

But Siddhartha made me want to kill myself. My school forced that as a reading assignment for kids entering honors frosh english. I doubt there is anything more evil.

I second Beloved as one of the most atrocious books ever

However,

Heart of Darkness is an amazing novel

LOL we are the complete opposite, knightmare... (does that make me a daydream?)

I can't stand any of Joyce's books, except for one of his short stories - 'Evelyn' from 'Dubliners'. Just too dense.

The heart of darkness is awesome

NEVER NEVER NEVER read the sound and the fury

your brain cells will race for death

which leads to headaches

which leads to confusion

then to sparknotes
5..but you still wont get it

depression.

anger, throw the book

book falls apart

monday morning, bad mood, teacher yells at you

you beat someone up

get suspended

screwed

that happened to my friend.
dont read it.
and if u do (u gotta read sparknotes to understand it
theres no way.

Native Son was an amazing book, I thought.

Heart of Darkness and The Grapes of Wrath would make this world a better place...if they were locked in an unopenable safe in the center of the earth where demons could scream from the horror of such atrocities ever having been written.

NO no no.
I loved The Grapes of Wrath and Rebecca (it takes a long while to get going but once it does, its pretty awesome)

But the Awakening was very very painful

eeps. I love the Chosen (and I'm not Jewish), but then again, i'm a big chaim potok fan in general. I also liked the scarlet letter and native son. my vote for worst "literary" novel goes to The Metamorphasis. GAH. It made me alternately scream, tear it apart, or fall asleep all the way through. oy.

ethan frome was crapppppppppp......
the damn pickle dish over and over and over again.....
such a trite storyline....line an indian movie

i loved ethan frome

has anyone here read the sound and the fury?

i second the grapes of wrath.
steinbeck in general angers me. he takes whole chapters to explain things that just dont matter.

thank goodness- i was sure i was the only person in the world that didnt like steinbeck. in the past two years i have had to read cannery row, the grapes of wrath, and mice and men - and i cant say i liked a single one.

What about East of Eden to redeem Steinbeck? That book sent me into spasms of joy. :)

I do not like A Farewell to Arms.

I agree! A Farewell to Arms is overrated!

I thought the Chosen was pretty good and I'm not Jewish; the friendship was touching.

I read The Sound and the Fury for AP Lit last year. My teacher started out by trying to read out the dates for everything, and the book was hell as long as I tried to pinpoint when everything happened. As soon as I just read it without worrying about that stuff it was great.l
