Turning down:

Well....I guess I might as well add mine too.

Berkeley, Cornell, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA.

:)

OK I know this sounds "blasphemous" coming from a loyal Dukie but why would you turn down HYP for Duke? Just curious. I myself turned down Dartmouth back in the day but that's more common I suspect.

Swarthmore, Columbia, JHU, WUSTL, UCLA, Berkeley, USC

go Duke!

I know of this girl who turned down Harvard yale princeton and columbia for duke.
I mean, isnt it pretty rare to get into all 4?!
I think she chose duke for finance reasons... but she still wouldve gotten money from hyp..

I don't think turning down HYP for Duke is that weird at all. I turned Princeton down to come here two years ago and have never regretted it a bit. Personally, you couldn't pay me to go to Harvard; I find it outlandish that it is able to attract so many bright kids as it is. I feel like most kids at Duke would say the same, especially those who have had the unfortunate experience of actually spending some time at the big H (gag). I have a number of friends here from freshman year who turned Harvard, Yale, and/or Princeton down to take a risk on this place and I can by and large attest to their satisfaction here. HYP may steal the kids with the highest test scores away from Duke but I definitely think we take the cake in attracting the chillest kids who happen to also be extraordinarily bright. I hope the tradition continues.

UPenn
WashU
UC Berkeley- regents
UCLA- regents

read the post above mine and you can see why my decision was so easy- GO BLUE DEVILS!

I am currently in the same situation as you were. I was accepted off the Duke Waitlist, and am currently going to cornell. I wasjust wondering what decision you made and why? plus what were your grades and where are you from?

skyman1214...send me a PM, we can talk.

I got off the waiting list a few weeks ago too...I'm going to Duke instead of Rice! And Cornell, WashU, and Univeristy of MD College Park (gemstones).

What influenced your decision? I need some opinions.

Some factors that influenced my decision: I'm doing BME -> Duke's undergrad BME is ranked 2. I'm from MD -> Duke is only 4 hours away. I like warm weather -> Duke is warmer than Cornell and cooler than Rice. My parents (and I, to some extent) care about prestige -> Duke is more selective than Cornell, and about the same as Rice I think. I like pretty campuses -> Duke's is really nice (but I must admit that I liked Rice's more). I like unity -> Everyone at Duke seems to have crazy school spirit, especially in relation to basketball. Hmm...I guess those were the main points I considered.

basically- people at Duke are cooler and much more fun!
and most people consider Duke a better school than Cornell

plus Duke basketball > everyone else
