What Bank @ Upenn?

Hey guys!

Just wondering if anyone knew what branch most students use for their banking solution and what not?

Most kids use PNC and PNC has the most ATMs. I'm with Wachovia and am pretty happy. Wachovia ha the nice thing of giving you $25 when you sign up for a student checking/savings account.

Use PNC. It's everywhere in Philly and they also have a pretty baseball stadium in Pittsburgh named after them.

Use PNC. There are always surcharge-free ATMs at Wawa, but it's easier to just have PNC.

this isn't really the same thing but i was wondering this as well: credit cards... get one? don't get one? get a penn one? i realize this isn't really penn-specific but hey...

I think debit cards are just generally a better idea. Especially if your mom and dad can just add money to your account back home.

I have a Bank of America student debit card right now. Do you think it'll be too much of an inconvenience? Or are the differences relatively minimal?

no bank of america?

just use a pnc debit card

b of a doesn't have any atms that are close by, and if i recall correctly they assess a charge even at surcharge-free atms (like at wawa)

You don't need a credit card, but it might be a good idea to have a credit card if you need cash to buy something and don't have enough on your debit card.

My recommendation: Have a PNC debit card and a debit card connected to a parent's account. If one card covers both, great, and if not then have two. Use PNC because you don't have to worry about surcharges, it's free to open a basic account, etc. I would recommend having a debit card connected to a parent's account in case you ever need an immediate transfer (if your accounts aren't connected it can take a day or two).

P.S. Having a credit card for cash doesn't make sense considering you can't get cash from one...

I meant if you need to pay for something if there is an emergency, having a credit card is nice so you don't have to worry about how much money is in your account.

Having a credit card available is really nice, and I would recommend that it and your debit card be linked to your parents. Then, after some time, you can get out there and get your own independent accounts when you have money of your own (I promise - it will happen!)

I also recommend PNC. It's the most popular by far. Commerce bank is also around campus, but PNC really is the most available.

wait.. but if you are a Wharton student.. isn't Commerce bank just right across the street.. so wouldn't commerce be the best choice for wharton students?

nah, pnc has many more locations all over campus

what about credit unions?

there's sfcu

Student Federal Credit Union at the University of Pennsylvania

what would you all recommend, sfcu or pnc? They both seem to offer the same free atm's on-campus. I like how sfcu lets you use your penncard as a debit card. Any opinions, here?

pnc lets you use your penncard as a debit, too

go for pnc, as it has more atms all over the region

Go for PNC. I have friends at SFCU and they hate it.
