Hey guys, I'm a sophmore at UMass-amherst and am looking to transfer for Fall 2007(as a Junior). Right now is a little early in the process but I'd like to really research the schools I want to apply to so I make the right decision. I will most likely major in Management but Finance and maybe Economics are other less likely options.

I am a member of the Honors college and my GPA is currently an 3.856 with 28 credits. I have all A's except for a B- in calculus. This semester Im taking a pretty challenging 17 credits. I know it is silly to speculate but I really believe I have the potential to pull straight A's and don't intend on getting anything less then a 3.7(which, worse case scenario would put me at 3.8 going into the Spring '07 semester) . In the Spring semester I plan on taking 18-21 credits hopefully including a course at Amherst College.

My H.S. stats are pretty unimpressive, I was a slacker and was unmotivated and had a 3.5 weighted GPA and an 1180 SAT (old). Hopefully this won't be weighed much as I will have around 60 college credits once all is said and done. My EC's are not spectacular, but I work as a referee/umpire for intramural sports and am a member of the Investment Club, Business School Honors Council and Undergraduate Leadership Program. I also have taken a summer trip to Nicaragua to work with kids in orphanages and plan on doing that again Summer '07.

In terms of recommendations and essays, I should be able to get 2 good Recs. and I consider myself a very good writer and will be able to produce very good essays.

Right now its very preliminary but here are some schools on my very early list. I realize some of these are definate reaches, but I really didn't take that into much consideration when making this list. Please let me know my chances at these schools and recommend some others. At this point, I really don't know how qualified an applicant I am an what type of schools could be considered "matches"

-NYU (Stern) - This is my top choice, my sister graduated this spring from NYU and my father got his M.B.A. from Stern so there is some legacy there. I am in-state as I am originally from NY(doubt this matters as NYU is private).

-USC (Marshall)
-Babson College
-UNC- Chapel Hill
-Georgetown
-WUSTL(Wash. U)
-Villanova
-Fordham
-Emory

I think your GPA is pretty good for all the schools you listed, however, you're probably going to have to do something about the SAT score. I believe, save NYU, all the other schools should accept newer scores.

So you're suggesting I retake the sat's? Interesting as it seems a bit silly to take an exam intended to determine how well you can do college work. after what will be 60 college credits, wouldn't sat's scores seem useless in guaging my academic ability?

I will look into it and I'm sure I could do better on it now then I did 2-3 years ago. anyone else have any comments about this?

Stern - match
Marshall - match
Babson - ?
UNC - low match
Georgetown - high match
WUSTL - high match
Villanova - ?
Fordham - ?
Emory - match/high match

I'm assuming you'll be applying to the b-schools at most of those universities. I second the retake SAT remark. For NYU, you'll also need to take two SAT Subject Tests as well as be sure to complete the reqs. Given those two factors, you should get into your #1 choice.

This deals with transfer students last year to the university overall (not just Stern)...just remember that Stern is typically a bit harder to get into and has a slightly lower acceptance rate than the rest of the college, save Tisch.

stern is more of a minor reach..i would retake the sats and you will need two subject exams. marshall is more of a match, and definitely fordham. i'm not so familiar with the other schools. good luck.

You don't need the SAT/ACT as a transfer student for NYU, IF you have completed more than 60+ units I believe in the school you're transferring from.

I wouldn't take the SAT unless you HAD to, and also don't send them your old one since it doesn't provide a current idea of your academics, and it's in fact a bit old.

Write good essays, get some EC's and Rec. letters and keep that GPA up, and you're in.

NYU strongly encourages students to send two SAT Subject test scores. They also recommend sending SAT scores if you took them in high school. I've been on their transfer site a lot lately.

lol same here. They don't require SAT scores though if you didn't take them in high school and haven't taken them yet. Bad scores = haven't taken them lol.

Brand_182: Are you applying to Stern for the Fall of 07 too ?

lol ok then well maybe I misunderstood that, but I do know they strongly encourage applicants to send in two SAT Subject test scores - just started this year.

If you are applying as a transfer student and you took either one of these tests while in high school, you should not retake the tests now; simply submit the results of your high school SAT I or ACT examinations. If you did not take the SAT, the SAT I or ACT examinations in high school and have been in college less than one year, you must take one of these tests and submit the results as part of your application. International students who are in an area where the ACT Writing Test is not offered must take the SAT.

I guess you can interpret that in different ways lol. Maybe I'm wrong... what did you score on the SAT/ACT ?

"We encourage all transfer applicants to submit official scores from two SAT Subject Tests (unless you are applying for any program in Tisch School of the Arts or the music or art programs in the Steinhardt School of Education)."

So there's a link...I scored 1350/1600 in high school, 2220/2400 in college, and just took the ACT so I find out Tuesday. Even if they may not be required, I think they can help.

Im going to try and retake the Sat's and then take the act's during January break. How do I send my new Sat scores without sending the old ones? I thought CollegeBoard will not let you choose which you can send. anyways, I never took any Sat subject tests in H.S. so I will have to do that. Which ones does Stern want to see? I know they probably want to see some kind of calculus, but hopefully I can get around that somehow :).

It seems each school is different from the next about what they want to see from transfers. I still think its silly they want to see Sat's but hey, with an 1180 in H.S., a better score can only help.

Hey, maybe if we all get in for Fall '07 we'll go have a drink.. or 2

Hey, can someone tell me how strict schools are about meeting their course requirements for transfers. Some schools want you to take certain courses and others want you to take different ones before transferring. at this point, it'd be impossible for me to satisfy all the wishes of each school I apply too. For example, NYU wants me to take 2 accounting courses(managerial and financial). I will be taking INtroductory accounting in Spring, but UMass doesnt distinguish between a mangerial or financial accounting. There is accounting I and II. You cannot take II unless you've taken I, and I haven't taken I yet, you see the dilemma?

also, with Recs: I would hate having to ask my prof's to write individual recs to each school, do schools accept stapled recs from professors right to their own individual forms? Right now Im looking at applying to 10 schools (I need to whiddle it down) but I would hate asking my busy professors to write 10 diff. recs., most of them don't even like the idea that you're transferring as it is.

i have a similar problem. i'm a freshman in college right now, hoping to transfer into stern for fall 2007. i am planning to take honors microeconomics 2nd semester, and right now i am fulfilling other requirements of theirs by taking calculus I and writing II. the closest thing to accounting i am taking now is honors intro to business. in order for you to take accounting I (which is a prerequisite for accounting II), you must be at least at sophomore standing. my school doesn't have managerial and financial.

a) do you think i should take calculus II 2nd semester, or a science instead? (i haven't taken science senior year of high school..so i'm wondering if they'll think its been a while).

b)does that intro to business class satisfy? thanks.
