What campus do you gravitate towards most?

I have had the privilege of seeing all the UC campuses I've applied to with the exception of Davis and somewhat Cal (I've been to Cal twice but that was years ago when I was in high school and I didn't even want to go to college then).

On each trip I've noticed that each campus I've been to has a very distinct atmosphere and that there were some campuses whose vibes I gravitate towards more - if that makes any sense?

If you guys have been to any of the campuses you applied to is there one in particular that you really like or didn't like because of its atmosphere?

Here were my experiences at each campus:

UCSC - The campus is beautiful, I'm quite an avid nature lover so it location is a bonus but for some reason there was something that was missing for me. Because its relatively close to where I live I am going to go visit again and see if its any different (I went during an event so there was a lot of people).

UCSB - The campus was nice, relatively easy to navigate, and I liked the view; however, the vibe just wasn't right for me.

UCD - Will be going over sometime next month.

UCLA - I'm not going to lie, I'm not a city person at all. I mean, I like the city for a week but that is pretty much it and UCLA is smack dab in the middle of a high traffic central area. When I first got onto the campus I was very intimidated and navigating the campus was as complicated as navigating the city. My first impression was not that good; however, after walking around the campus something about it that I can't explain really appealed to me, the vibe there is great.

Cal - Even though I went to Cal a few years ago I plan to go again, obviously with the mindset that I could spend a few years of my life there; however, from what I remember when I did go was that it was a nice campus and it was always easy to know your relative position because of the bell tower.

Sorry for all of these random useless posts, but the wait is not being kind to me and I want to talk to people about university (just not the people who continually ask me if I've been accepted even though I've told them I won't find out until April).

You know Anthro, We’re a couple of smart cookies if CC gpa is any sort of metric to go by. I can only hope the schools we plan on attending are a right fit for us. I’ve only been to UCSD and UCSB, as most of the others are too far and I haven’t had a chance to visit. Every place I’ve been has had such a larger sense of purpose to everything, its a completely different ballpark, and I can only hope to embrace the change or get swallowed.

Thanks @nichtszumachen, that is very kind of you!

I agree. It has been so hard for me to think of where I’d like to go if I get accepted to more than one campus simply because I see that each campus has something wonderful about it. Most people tell me that I should only focus on Cal and UCLA but I am looking at more than just prestige in my decision.

Where else have you applied?

I wish you all the best with your university experience! I’m sure that you will be able to embrace the change and that the experience will allow you to expand your mind and grow as a person.

I applied to Berkeley,UCLA,UCSD,UCSB,UCD,UCSC .4.0 gpa Poli Sci /International Relations major. I’m still worried haha. Yeah it’s time to shift course in life, 20 years young, these bones aren’t working like they used to ;p

Nice (:
We both applied to the same schools, except you applied to UCSD and I didn’t.
Same! I just want to know if I’ve been accepted or not and how much money they want to give me :wink:
Don’t I know it, well, hopefully our old bones can tolerate this enormous life change and living off of lucky charms for two years, or at least I plan to live off of lucky charms anyway…

Where are you from in this wondrous state? are you 20 as well? I’m down south in the desert!

I’m up north, I quite like it up here (: but am willing to move for university. And yes, I am also 20.
Ouch, in the desert? I’m sure its beautiful but Isn’t it a bit too hot sometimes?
But then again, that would be life if I moved down to LA for school, but I suppose am just not used to any sort of real heat.

All the glamour some parts of the year, yet destitute the rest. I havent always lived in California, I moved here from Virginia 7 years ago or so.

I’m a California native, born and raised.
How do you like it here compared to Virginia?

Nice! I like it better, I feel my opportunities have opened up more out here. Everyone I used to know in VA had a baby at 16 and still seem content with the same old song. There are always the moments where you feel nobody can relate though. Community college has been pretty easy, but the lack of community such as one finds in a UNI is unfortunate.

I’ve only been to UCLA once(It was a long time ago and I basically don’t remember what the campus looked like in-person), but I think I’d like the vibe of that school, which is great since it’s where I’d like to go most.

I think I’d like Berkeley as well, but the campus buildings don’t look as pretty as UCLA’s. :P

@nichtszumachen

Don’t think its drastically different just because you are in California, the number of girls that I know of who got pregnant during high school was quite high, I actually heard from a few people that my graduating class had an unusually high influx of teen pregnancies.

I quite like my community college. Most of the professors I’ve had, with the exception of one or two, are really knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects and, as someone who already likes the process of learning, it just made everything a lot better.

Though you are correct, if you want to connect and make friends it is something you have to put a lot of actual effort into but I honestly don’t mind it much really. I tend to be a more introverted person so I don’t mind the alone time.

@Cayton

Nice (: Hope you get to see the universities you applied to before you make your decision.
I found that despite the city hustle that UCLA had a really nice vibe, at least for me anyway.

Guess I’m one of the few people that doesn’t really like UCLA. Campus is too small and condensed compared to other UCs. It’s nice that is has some east coast, old-school style university architecture but the campus just didn’t connect with me. I’m biased though since I’ve lived in LA all my life.

Ive only visited UCLA UCSD and UCI. UCLA was my favorite campus I really like the buildings and atmosphere from the students. However as soon as you drive away its a nightmare, worst traffic ever. I’ve lived in LA my entire life and hate traffic. UCI campus was nice, liked the area too. UCSD which is my top choice after UCLA, was my least favorite campus. I really want to go there because I’ve always wanted to live in San Diego, and have always planned on moving there. However the actually campus was just boring imo. The buildings are older and plain looking. The students seems a bit less lively as well.

@AnthroFlo

Let’s hope so!

@smltk1505h

It’s funny, UCLA has the smallest campus among the UCs and the largest number of students, so it does make the campus feel crowded as hell.

Not everyone can like UCLA and there’s nothing wrong with that. How do you feel about Cal and the other UCs?

Is it safe to tell people you are effectively in ucsb if you tagged there? haha

@nichtszumachen

As long as you don’t screw up, then yeah, sure lol

I’ve visited all of the UC’s except Merced, Riverside, and San Diego. I really think that Berkeley and UCLA have the best campuses, with Cal slightly having the edge in my opinion (I think UCLA’s buildings can get pretty monotonous).

UCI is too commuter! It really is. UCSB has great views and weather, UCSC is nice but not my type of environment. I’m not a fan of Davis either. LOL.

Cal? Yuck. Visited a few years back and just didn’t like it at all. Can’t really explain it.

Visited UCSB not too long ago as well. Not a fan of the campus, didn’t like the architecture. It’s nice that it’s close to the beach but the party reputation doesn’t sit well with me.

My favorite so far is UCI’s campus. Beautiful, spacious, serene. Like almost everything about it, besides having to drive everywhere but I have a car so it’s not too much of an issue. has a reputation as a commuter school but I don’t mind too much. Have a few friends that go there so it probably gives it an edge for me.

UCSD is also quiet nice. Campus was very pretty. Academics wise, probably the best school I can attend but there’s more to choosing a school than academics and prestige. Heard it’s socially dead from many people, which makes me somewhat weary. Visited San Diego a few times and really like the city. Would be a nice change. Huge flying club down there in San Diego.

Haven’t visited UCSC, UCR, or UCM and don’t really care for them, especially UCR and UCM, seeing as how they’re in the middle of nowhere. UCSC sounds nice but eh. Applied to UCD, heard it’s a great college town kinda-like place but realistically it’s too far from home.

Just shows that everyone has different tastes when it comes to the UCs. It’s great that we have so many choices, assuming you have the grades.
