if you have applied ED and are waiting to apply RD, working on your supplements, etc, not wanting to apply to the rest of the colleges till Dec. 15th, since you don't want to pay those fees, just in case, you still have a filled out Common App, sitting in Ether with the college list. My kid has received a letter and an email, from two different colleges with approximate wording of " we see from the Common Application that you have College XYZ on your list, if you would like to have an interview/apply for a merit scholarship......." So we can guess that the colleges see that they are on a particular student's list, and the student's email and home address (one of the colleges wasn't visited, absolutely zero communication with it). What else can they see? Other colleges a student is thinking of? Grades? Scores? Essays?

good question!

I wonder if they can see if another school was chosen for ED.

D went on an interview at her 2nd choice school. We may even do ED2, and I swear from the tone of the interview that they may have known she ED’d another school, even though it was never asked to her directly.

During the registration process, students elect to receive or not receive email communications from colleges on their My Colleges list. If they opt in, then colleges are able to access the following information: Prefix, First Name, Middle Name, Last Name, Suffix, Preferred Name, Address1, Address2, City, State, ZIP, Country, Ethnicity, Sex, ApplicantID, Citizenship Status, Home Phone, Cell Phone, Fax, Email, DOB, SSN, Entry Term, Decision Type, Applicant Type (First Year or Transfer), Academic Interest, Paid Status, School Officials, IM Address, IM provider, School CEEB and School Name.

This information is spelled out in the Privacy Policy, accessible from the footer of any page within a student’s account. Student’s can change their opt-out election at any time by clicking “Account” from the top right menu when logged in.

Colleges cannot see any other part of the student’s application until the student submits it, nor can they see where else a student has applied/is considering.

Thank you!!! That’s great info, which I had no idea about since I wasn’t the one doing the registration.

so if a student applied ED to one school and EA to a few others, the EA schools would know that they were not the student’s first choice? I would assume this could impact the EA schools’ willingness to offer the student early admittance. Am I understanding that correctly?

my student applied ED to one school and was deferred. At least two of her EAs were safeties and we have not heard from either of them, but we do know that they have been sending out acceptances.

No, you are not correct. No college using the Common Application can see if you have applied to any other colleges, which colleges those are, or how you are applying. As WinstonWolfe said above, colleges can see only what is laid out in the Privacy Policy (presented when an account is created and accessible from the bottom any page in the Common App Online). Nothing else.
