(1) Alright, so I'm trying to figure out whether I should take a calculus (I've already taken precalc.) class out at the local community college the first semester of my senior year and then take statistics out there my second senior semester. My other option would be taking AB Calculus or Calculus BC at my home school. The home school course wouldn't be in a class, instead I would study by myself and then take the final exam at my home school.

(2) Also, if you're home-schooled, does it look better if you take community college classes or home-school classes (study by yourself and take tests at school)?

(3) Finally, should I take AP Classes my senior year or regular classes? I've never taken any, but would it look better when applying to colleges?

Thank you.

How are you at self studying math? Do not consider doing it by yourself unless you are very strong. Both my kids self studied for Calc BC, but they are strong math students - but even then, my youngest got a bit bogged down, and was helped out by her big bro. Calc can be tricky. If you do decide to do it yourself, remember Khan academy has some great explanations on their site.

Jury is out on weather schools prefer CC or AP, but what is clear is that they do like to see CC or AP, so yes, take some APs your senior year. My kids went the AP route, because we just weren’t ready to give up the freedoms that HSing gave us, but it is a personal decision. The advantage of CCs is that they give outside validation, so if you are short on that, then it might be a good idea. Though, as a senior, it wont give you much.

The real beauty of taking AP classes in your senior year is that you do not actually have to take the exams at the end of the year, and it does not reflect on you at all. My son went to a college that gives no AP credit, so he did not take any of this tests. My daughter did take one her senior year, but that also turned out to be unnecessary, since they school changed their policy w/r/t to Latin APs and credit.

I agree with anotherparent that you should have one or the other or both. BUT I think that at this stage of the game, you have to have some sort of outside validation before applications. That would either be CC classes in fall semester or SAT II Subject tests in early fall semester.

Good luck!
