What Classes To Take

Just at least know what you are getting yourself into.

Yeah I hear ya. I’m not taking it if I don’t need it.

hey guys i was wondering if i should take cs1371 in the late summer session for the new freshmen? i took java prog(not the ap course) in highschool and did well so do you think this is good idea to take this class in the summer or i should wait till the fall? im planning to major in bio or biomed eng and want to go to med school afterwards, i think this class can fulfill the computing requirement for biology major and is a required class for biomed eng. any help is greatly appreciated…if you do recommend taking it, are there any notes that i can access online? i havent seen how the language of MATLAB looks, but i assume it should be somewhat similar to java.

also, can anyone tell me how to start a new thread on college confidential…im new to college confidential so i couldnt figure it out. thank you again!

hmm ive never learned matlab so im not sure how it is but if you have taken java it shouldnt be too hard as long as you understand the logic. The syntax will probably be different but the idea should still be the same. Here is a link that has lots of tutorials for MATLAB.

Right below the “FAQ” you will see the text “New thread” once you click tht you will be directed to a page and there you can put your title and stuff and post it.

MATLAB is absolutely NOT similar to Java. MATLAB is not object oriented, not strongly typed, indexes at 1 (annoying), and is matrix-based for everything. However, if you were able to learn Java in a reasonable amount of time, you will be able to learn MATLAB in a reasonable amount of time as well. Also, already having the programming mindset and knowledge of simple commands like loops will give you a head start in the class.

^ exactly what I was thinking. Really not that similar.

I had the option of taking CS1371 as a freshman entering the late summer session, but did not. However, I knew people that did, and they highly recommended that no one else takes it. CS 1371 is not necessarily a hard class, but it is a lot of material to learn in such a short duration. If you do decide to take it, please keep in mind that you will have to dedicate a decent potion of your day to day schedule to the class.

thank you for the replies!!

i had one other question: is calculus a prequisite for cs 1371? i didnt take calculus in highschool, just precalculus so thats why i was wondering…is this going to make the class more challenging?

I don’t believe it is. According to this, (<a href=“Detailed Course Information”>Detailed Course Information), there are no prerequisites listed, where for a class like CS 3451, Math 2605 is listed as a requirement in addition to some others (<a href=“Detailed Course Information”>Detailed Course Information).

While some calculus concepts are used in CS 1371, you won’t be at a disadvantage. You can simply memorize the MATLAB way of calculating integrals, derivatives, and matrix manipulations. I can’t recall applying anything I had learned in Calc I (I had not taken Calc II until after CS 1371) to the class.
