What clothes should I get?

Hi, I am a guy from Hawaii and have lived here my whole life. I will be attending college in Seattle this fall. I have never been to Seattle so I don't know what to expect (especially the weather). I basically wear T-shirts and shorts year round. I know I will have to do a lot of shopping, so what type of clothes should I get and how much? Your responses will be much appreciated.

You can look up monthly weather for your destination in August/September. Your normal wardrobe is probably what many students wear that time at your destination, but you may want to add another layer (e.g. jacket) since it is cooler than in Hawaii. Be prepared to buy clothes there as needed for changing weather conditions as the months go by.

Seattle’s temperature is average and rainy year-round.
Buy few t-shirts, shorts, a casual and formal wear … basically something that might be needed upon arrival, and travel light.
Safe your money till you arrive on campus, and then buy what you need as you go along. Traveling with excessive luggage at the airport might a hassle as-well.

Great advice given so far.
Although September in Seattle is still relatively dry, t-shirts will not keep you warm. So think about packing an extra layer like a sweatshirt. You will need longer pants (jeans for sure). The rainy season begins later in October, and you can buy rainwear after you arrive. REI is a popular outdoor store with a large selection, although my son would not wear REI because it looked too outdoorsy. Eddie Bauer and Macy’s are good stores to shop also. The North Face is stylish but expensive. You’ll want a heavier coat for the winter months.

There are also discount leftover stores like TJ Maxx / Marshall’s and Ross.

Also, hit the Seattle thrift stores when you arrive (look for all-weather jackets, etc.).

^^ Leftover stors? I though TJM/Mars/Ross were all brand-new item stores…certainly discounted compared to the top 10 stores…but “LEFTOVERS”? …LOL…haven’t heard of that one before…

Yes, they offer leftovers that other retailers were unable to sell. Yes, the stuff is brand new and often a good bargain.
