What college can i go too realistically

I am a senior and i am wondering what college i could go too , i have some knowledge like i know i really cant get accepted to any UC’s so basically CSU and Community’s. I got dropped from the ib program for my senior year classes because junior year second semester was the worst point in my life I couldn’t focus I had too much going on in my life and grades portrayed that.So for my senior year I am going to make up the F for Ib English and Ib history and Algebra 2 so after all that what are my choices. ( And yes for my senior year I am going to pass all my classes) My SAT score was around 900 And for sports I played golf freshman year and baseball junior and senior.

With a 900 SAT, you should start at community college, maybe even do the two year transfer degree over three years to help keep your GPA up. Your chances for a good four-year school will be better as a transfer.

If your SAT score represents your difficult circumstances last year and not your true academic potential, retake the test and repost with the improved results.

The D’s and F’s will be an issue for many of the Cal States. You need to meet the minimum a-g course requirements or your application will not be considered.

https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/freshman/getting_into_the_csu/Pages/admission-requirements.aspx#hsReqScroll

If you do meet the requirements, then you need to calculate your CSU GPA and eligibility index. I would focus on the non-impacted campuses such as Bakersfield, East Bay, Dominguez Hills, Stanislaus and Channel Islands. You could get an acceptance with a minimum EI of 2900 (SAT)

How Cal States admit:

The Cal states admit by major and eligibility index. They really only consider GPA/Test scores/Geographic location and HS course rigor. Other than Cal Poly SLO, your EC’s are not considered.

You need to calculate your CSU/UC GPA using grades from a-g courses taken 10-11th.

https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

Not sure which courses are a-g and will give you extra honors points, then use this link by typing in your HS name?

https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/institution

Cal states and the majority of the UC’s use the capped weighted GPA.

Then calculate your Eligibility index:
If you took the Redesigned SAT:
(CSU capped weighted GPA X 800) + (SAT Evidence Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) + Math Score) = Eligibility Index

Eligibility index for ACT:
(CSU capped weighted GPA X 200) + (ACT Composite x10)= Eligibility Index

You will then be ranked based on EI and major and they accept from the top down until all spots are filled.

You will get priority at your local CSU which you can look up on this link. Local applicants usually require a lower EI to get an acceptance unless the program is highly impacted.

If you are not happy with possible CSU choices, you could go to community college, excel in your classes there and transfer to preferred CSU or UC via TAG. I suggest you retake the SAT and bump up your scores.

you think after I make up those classes and retake the sat I will have a better chance ? I really want to go to a cal state
like forsure I’m making up my the two D’s and that one F for English before I graduate and if I do really good in my senior year. what do you think will be my best option?

Unfortunately junior year is the key year for college admissions. If you are applying during senior year, those final grades are not available until after admissions decisions are done.

Is a fifth year of high school an option?

so you think community transfer is. my best bet ?

GumbyMom is the voice of authority for California public college admissions. You should carefully evaluate your CSU options as laid out above, and if those don’t fit with your major/career/location desires, then I think community college is an excellent choice. One thing you could consider: If you have your eye on a particular CSU or UC school (e.g. SDSU or UCSB) and if you’re planning to work and move out anyway while you attend community college, then you could move to attend the local community college near where you want to end up anyway (e.g. SD Mesa College for SDSU, SB City College for UCSB).

Are you taking or have taken the repeat Math and English class over the summer? Are you doubling up on English your Senior year?

The problem is that you need to have at least 11 of the 15 a-g course requirements completed prior to applying to the Cal States. Not having a Junior year English along with the Math requirements completed prior to application might cause your application to be rejected automatically. You need to contact some of the non-impacted CSU’s I mentioned to see if they will even review your application. CSU’s are sticklers when it comes to the 4 years of English, so applying with only 2 complete years is a Red Flag.

Again, explore your CSU options, but I would highly recommend a community college. You can do 2 years at a CC, get good grades and then transfer to a better choice CSU. AS @rocket88 stated, if you have a CSU target school, it would be an advantage to attend a local in-service area CC for higher priority.

Good Luck.

Yes. If you really want to take a shot at a four-year school straight out of high school, look into being a fifth year senior. But, community college is probably better. Most kids like community college better than high school, but go visit yours and see what you think.

Assuming you have the a-g course list complete, you’d need a 2.5 CSU GPA to meet the 2900 Eligibility index threshold for admission to non-impacted CSUs - which, with a re-take or two looks possible. As long as you’ve met those hurdles, there’s no reason not to apply to a couple of non-impacted campuses. You should call or visit a couple, their admissions counselors can help you understand exactly how your transcript meet the requirements and what you can do now to maximize your chance of admission. If you make an appointment, they really will take the time to sit down with you and map your best path forward. Get in before too many weeks of school have elapsed so you can adjust your schedule as they recommend.

I would say though, your mental health trumps all. If you were my kid, i’d have you spend most of your energy on that front, I’d dump the AP spanish class (especially given your grades in the previous spanish courses) The IB Visual arts class is another time sink with no ROI. Dump it as well and and use the slot to fill the math and english a-g gaps or as a free period while you work on the other aspects of your life.

There is no shame in starting at a CC, it may be the best route for you. Many moons ago, it is the path i took and my time there has NEVER held me back.

Good luck

i am taking algebra 2 second semester again and english 11 b and us history second semester in credit recovery , if i drop ap spanish what should i take instead ?

The issue is that you will not have a full year of Junior English grades to submit to the Cal States and no Senior year grades for any classes at time of application. so like I stated in the above post, your application will most likely be rejected.

So based on your Senior schedule posted, you are taking Expository Reading and Writing (Senior English for the year?), then you are taking 2nd semester of Junior English along with 2nd semester of Algebra 2 again which would be in the last semester of Senior year? If you do not repeat the IB Math studies (which I assume you cannot), the F’s remain on your record and are included in your GPA.

Do you still plan to take Stats?

I would assume you have to drop one Class to accommodate the two repeat classes?

Mathematics
A grade of “C” or higher in Algebra II validates Algebra I. A grade of “C” or higher in the second semester of a yearlong course will validate a “D” or “F” in the first semester. A grade of “C” or higher in a higher-level math course (i.e., trigonometry or pre-calculus) validates the entire high school college preparatory requirement. Successful completion of a statistics course will validate Algebra I and Algebra II, but will not validate Geometry. Integrated mathematics courses may also validate prior coursework. For more information, see the FAQ provided on the UC “a-g” list.

Contact some of the non-impacted Cal States to see if it is even possible for you to submit an application.

If I remember correctly, if you cannot fulfill the a-g course requirements when you fill out the CSU application, you will get a pop up warning which would indicate that a CSU may not be a viable option.

Best of luck.

get a printed copy of your transcript and current schedule - sit down with an admission counselor at a non-impacted CS and see what they say. Seriously, do it NOW before it is too late to change you SR schedule. Maybe they can help you find a path If not, you’ll know and can behave accordingly and shouldn’t waste time taking the SAT again.

No gummy at my school there is something called credit recovery so it is a class in the morning like a zero period and after school. You get me , so I would be taking English 11 b for my zero period and apex after school I don’t know if you are familiar with that but its online courses that you can work on during class and at home on the computer at your own pace.None of my senior year classes are impacted.

Hypothetically if my transcript look something likes this with a score of 900 on the SAT what are my chances now you would say. I just want to know that question and what classes should I change for senior year to help better my chances?

I get a 2.55 CSU GPA with a 900 SAT which gives you a 2940 Eligibility index. You would barely qualify to apply to a CSU and you would need to target the non-impacted campuses. Do you know your local CSU?

I live in Compton so it would be like Cal State Dominuez , LA , Long Beach , Northridge ,Fullerton , ?

Dominguez Hills is a non-impacted CSU so service area does not matter. According to the link, your local CSU is Long Beach which is a competitive and difficult CSU to get in even being local.

Have you checked with your HS so see if they any special programs that gives you a local student a extra bump in admissions for CSULB?

ill check on Tuesday when I go back to school and take all this information to my counselor to see what she says. Cant thank you enough for the help ill keep you posted.

Please keep the CC posters up to date and best of luck.
