I'm a senior in high school and looking to get my college laptop for christmas. I really want to get an alienware for the power and gaming but i am also looking at a mac because i hear that they are easier to manage and last longer. ive never used a mac and am very framiliar with windows. so basically what im asking is what laptop will last longer? because if im going to drop a $1k+ i want it to be a good investment.

Just buy a 13 or 15 inch MacBook Pro. Alienwares might look cool to you now but you’ll regret your decision in a year or two when you realize how tacky the design is.

One issue is whether you should get it now or wait until after you have accepted admission to a college and get closer to attending college. As somebody once said, referring to the continuing improvements to computers as time progresses, the computer you buy today will be obsolete as soon as you take it out of the box. Also, as to anything you could buy today, it is likely that the exact same computer with the same software will cost less six months from now. Also, you should explore the computer web pages of the colleges that you are considering and see what they say about recommendations for computers. Colleges provide minimal recommendations for computers and, more important, they often have deals with computer sellers that allow students to purchase for a discounted price that is less than you can purchase retail, but you will not be able to do such a purchase until after you have accepted admission to a college.
