What College will give me full tuition/full ride?

I wouldn’t call it bias, how about wisdom? You haven’t disclosed your UW GPA, so we can only guess, but let’s say 3.2 based on the 3.8 Weighted you gave.

At Michigan only 4% of Enrolled Freshmen had a 3.24 or lower GPA (probably most of them athletes as well) and only 8% were outside the top 10% at their school. We parents aren’t setting the odds, we’re just reporting them.

Drmagic… With thosesat scores, you should be receiving mail from colleges. Perhaps you should read some of that mail. Some of those schools may interest you. We had a friend whose kiddo got 800cr and 790 math a few years back and she received tons of college mailings… Tons… With excellent merit aid offers.

She had a good GPA in hs but the colleges sending her the mail didn’t know that. They were sending info based ons at scores only.

Great SAT I/SAT II/ ACT scores…you are obviously a ■■■■■ because your scores do not match up with your class rank and course grades.

Come again?

Just checked a “chance me” thread from OP. Don’t worry, according to the high schoolers he is getting in everywhere, so we are not needed. ;)

Wait…Hold on…you assume that the “majority of ‘respondees’
on this thread are parents.” What would give you that impression? Could it be that you posted your question ON THE PARENTS forum?!

Yes, ask your questions to kids on the students forum. Yes, that’s a good idea…they certainly have more experience with this kind of thing…uh huh, yep, yes sir…

speaking as a parent who was testing out the scholarship theory at elite schools whose kid had scores on par with yours if not perfect and also top 2-3%, National merit scholar, national ap scholar etc…

USC - not invited for interview for trustee (full tuition)
Wash U - not invited for merit scholarship interviews
Chicago - deferred early eliminating any chance of a major scholarship
Pittsburgh - tuition waiver
Minnesota - National Merit brought in a lot of money
Iowa State - reasonable amounts

You have to go beyond top 30 or so to get merit money even with a well rounded academic profile.

Like to hear an update on your applications. Entomom wrote:
There are many colleges within the USN&WR top 100 that offer substantial merit scholarships, starting with 2 schools on the within the top 10; 4 within schools #11-20…

Did you ever track those down? Are you applying for scholships? I understand some have deadlines within the next month. Good luck!

I’m still stuck on doctormagic’s plan to earn $20,000/yr.

At $10/hour (which is above minimum wage) x 40 hours/week = $400
So to make that $20,000/yr—that would be working 50 weeks! In other words, working full time. And that is to gross $20,000…not net of taxes or anything else.

So where does going to school fit in to this plan?

Doctormagic needs a new plan less based on magical thinking, as to both finance and academics.

There are a LOT of schools out there that would be happy to admit him and his tippy-top scores, and a good number of them would award him substantial merit aid based on that fancy test score; but those are not necessarily the ones on his “prestige only” list.

Some of the schools he would like to attend would reject him based on his grades; some might admit him, but as he is not at the top of their applicant pools, not give him merit aid.

The schools most likely to give him the merit money he seeks tend to be a little bit lower in the prestige pecking order, although they are excellent schools–Doctormagic just needs to decide which is the most important consideration for him.

I hope he does check in with an update.
