I'm worried about what colleges I am eligible to apply to. Here in California, to apply to any UC or CSU, all applicants must have had college preparatory classes in high school in core classes. My dilemma is that for one semester in my sophomore year, I took 3 courses online and it was not credited as college prep. I understand that this makes me ineligible to apply to UCs and CSUs, but do I at least have eligibility to apply to private colleges?
Thanks in advance!

depends on the private colleges. you can go to the college website that youre interested in and look up the info. Usually it should be under admissions/apply.

Stephen, there may still be ways to make up the A-G requirements needed for the UCs and CSUs so don’t rule them out, particularly if you are still a junior. You may need to take summer school and/or retake a course this year, and/or take a course at your local CC while still taking your high school courses.

Here is a link telling you what the requirements are, including ways to make them up if you missed them. Note that the requirements never specify particular grades for completing each class. I believe the same applies for UCs.

Private colleges vary in what they are looking for, but not all adhere to the a-g requirements. To find out what each college is looking for, google their name with “common data set”. You will get a pdf with information about that colleges’ admission requirements, along with lots of other helpful information.

What classes did you miss at the college prep level?

There are also ways of validating your coursework by getting a sufficiently high score on SAT subject tests, or on subsequent coursework. See this link for more info:

Thanks for the reply! I was able to make up 2 of the 3 courses, the only non college prep course I have is sophomore English. I have weighed the option of taking a sophomore class in my senior year, but I will be taking 4 APs and an honors class already. I have ruled out UCs and CSUs and are interested in private schools.

I think you will need to call some of the private schools and ask them. If you were my child, I’d be encouraging you to drop an AP and retake a semester of sophomore English to keep you CSU/UC eligible. But I really have no idea what the privates would say. I think you should call some asap.

Best wishes. It sounds like you will do fine whatever you do. People have tough semesters (or tough years) and life goes on. You seem to have recovered nicely.
