I remember finding a pdf last year of all the high school courses that UF considers to be honors/AP weight. I am particularly looking for this because my school gives me honors weight for the Engineering course I am in, and I would like to see what my UF GPA would look like.
Any insight as to what is determined to be honors or regular, in terms of UF admissions, is much appreciated. Thanks!
Ask for a copy of your HS transcripts. Since you attend a Florida HS, they following the state course naming and numbering scheme. Your transcript will identify which classes are honors and which are AP, etc. UF follows the same standard.
Florida school districts can identify some classes as “local” honor classes. UF will likely also treat these as honors, as long as it shows up on your transcripts.
But for example: a student applies with an entrepreneurship class on their high school schedule and it’s called “entrepreneurship” on their high school transcript. The high school counts it as honors credit because it is a part of the NAF Academy.
Will UF consider it a regular class with regular weight because of the fact that it doesn’t say honors directly in the name, and since it is not a “traditional” honors class?
I don’t believe it is counted as an honors class, but then again I may be completely wrong. Your best bet would be to just call the Admissions office. As soon as the automated voice answers you can dial ) and when the operator picks up just ask to speak with an admissions officer, its very easy to talk to someone at UF.
@Monkey288195 On my D’s transcript there is a code the signifies a course is designated as honors (also that class is weighted an extra .5 in the grade calculation). Many of her classes do not have Honors in the official course name, such as gifted classes, but have a field with the honors code.
@CaucAsianDad Ok thanks. How do I actually calculate the GPA? I understand the weighting system, .5 for Honors and 1 for AP.
But do I add that on to each semester grade for the class? Also once I’ve added each class their respective weight do I just divide by how many classes I’ve taken in total? Or do I not include the regular classes?
I created a spreadsheet for my D that has 5 columns:
Column 1 - Name of class and semester, i.e. Algebra I Honors, Semester 1
Column 2 - Point value of grade, A=4, B=3, etc. No ± grades, just letter grade
Column 3 - Class weighting Regular=0, Honors=.5 AP/IB/ACIE/DE=1
Column 4 - Column 2 plus column 3
Column 5 - Academic classes - If the class is an academic class put in the value in column 4, other wise leave blank
She added all her classes to as a separate row to the spreadsheet (if this seems like a lot of work just wait until you fill out the SSAR!) from her official transcript. She then averaged the GPAs using the AVERAGE function.
Average of Column 2 is your UW GPA. Verify this against the GPA your school reports to make sure you did not miss something
Average of Column 4 is your W GPA. Verify against what your school reports if they report weighted GPA.
Average of Column 5 is your UF GPA.
Yes, consider each semester of a year long class as two classes. Add up all the grade points for only the academic classes and divide by the number of academic classes.
Your classes MUST be identified as honors on your transcript in some way to be given extra weight by UF.
Just because your HS considers a class as honors doesn’t make it so unless stated on your transcript.
