confused about gpa?

Okay. Bare with me here. The University of Florida calculates gpa by adding .5 for honors classes and 1 for ap classes. In my school they offer cp (basic level) advanced then honors then ap classes (thats in ascending order of difficulty) I took all advanced classes. Now look at this link Guidance / Overview and click on the last link (gpa calculation instructions) A classes are weighed higher because theyre harder than cp. But in UF's system the difference between a student taking all cp and all A classes is that there is no difference correct? Since they are neither ap or h classes. So basically a student who recieved the same exact grades as me in all cp classes (easier) would have a lower highschool weighed gpa but the same weighted uf gpa right? Please help im very confused. Thanks!

Accelerated*not advanced

GPA counts certainly, but the admissions office is also looking for academic rigor and if students are making the most of the opportunities that their high school offers. This is why the chance me threads with stats isn’t very helpful - the context is missing.

You are correct. A course must be listed as honors or AP for UF to add extra weight to the grade.

Your accelerated (and honors) classes are likely treated as “honors” by UF (and FSU), so they would get 0.5 points. Talk with your guidance department, I’m sure they run into this issue all of the time (converting GPA to UF/FSU/UCF…etc…weighted GPA).

If they can’t answer, then contact someone in UF admissions, I’m sure they can give you an answer.

PS: Don’t forget they (UF/FSU…etc) are only looking at academic classes, while your school only excludes Physical Education.

Hmm…I see your school is in NJ, still it’s common for Universities to use a weighted GPA, simliar to UF’s. If your guidance department can’t answer your question, please contact UF admissions!

Good Luck!

My son’s HS had to SPECIFICALLY re-name their courses as Honors to make them count as honors for GPA consideration. A computer does the initial sorting and although your school can send a letter explaining your school’s system don’t count on it happening.
