Hi guys,
From here:
Area Requirements — Undergraduate, College of Arts & Sciences, U.Va.
You can see the courses that count toward humanities requirement. I am planning to apply to comm school, so I need to complete 3 credit Humanities/Fine art course. (Prerequisites)
This confuses me a little, it says humanities/fine arts on mcintire page , but on the first link ,AS college's one, humanity section includes the fine art. So, does it mean that I can choose course from Moral, Philosophical, and Religious Perspectives or Literature to fulfill pre-comm requirement or do I only have to choose course from fine art section? Also does Russian Language (part of slavic language and culture) between 1000 to 2000 level cound toward this requirement? Sorry for asking too much , I am an international student who is a little bit confused about this course choosing :)
Thanks guys!

hey! i am also applying to comm school (yikes!)

I’m not sure if this helps you, but it says below, “Humanities and foreign language requirements as defined in the Record, College of Arts & Sciences. Three additional hours of humanities will be required before graduation and may be taken either before or after entering the McIntire School.”

And, the way I interpreted this was that we must do a total of 9 credit hours in order to graduate as a comm student, but only 6 of those hours must be completed BEFORE we apply for comm school in the end of our 2nd year.

But, I talked to other students and they interpreted it as the 9 credit hours may be completed throughout the 8 semesters…? I don’t want to misinform you.

Best of luck with McIntire!

You can fulfill the Humanities/Fine Arts requirement with any courses from any of the listed departments–not just fine arts. Language-learning courses don’t count as “Humanities/Fine Arts,” but literature courses in the same departments would count. So, in the Slavic dept, say, a Dosteyevsky class would count but an introductory Russian language class wouldn’t.

do philosophy courses count toward this requirement?

Yes, a philosophy class would be fine.
