Junior year i can drop language for an honors course and senior year i can drop language for an ap course. I know a lot of honors and ap look good on transcripts but competitive colleges want 3-4 years of language. what should i do?
Take the 3rd and 4th year of foreign language. They are pretty much a necessity in order to get into top schools.
Competitive colleges want level 3+4 so if you’re aiming for a competitive college, you definitely need level 3 and senior year you can balance out if it’s a core AP vs. Level 4
Agree on other advice to take language for next year. You can review your hopeful list of colleges and see what they recommend before deciding on the last year.
This quote comes from U of Richmond, which is admittedly not the most selective college (still selective). The 5 core areas they are referring to are English, Math, History, Science, and Foreign Language.
What I would suggest is having as close to this ideal as possible; have 4 of each. If you really don’t want to take 4 years of a foreign language, compensate with another subject, preferably one of interest. For example, if you love math, take 6 math classes; that should compensate for only 3 foreign languages. However, we are all in agreement that you should take at least the 3rd level. In the 4th year, you can have a little bit of leeway and might opt to go to a more interesting AP route.
BTW: Talk to your guidance counselor and see what classes, if taken, will constitute the “most rigorous” course load; bend to this and you will be ok. If that senior year AP course unchecks to box if you don’t take it, it’s no contest; ditch the FL.
