What courses to take prior to applying as a transfer

I'm beginning at a California CC this upcoming academic year and will be applying as a transfer applicant to Berkeley during my second year so that I will be able to transfer in as a junior applicant.

I plan on applying as an English major and have already visited www.assist.org in order to find out what courses I should take during my two years at my CC in order to prepare myself best.

However, when I visited the website, it only listed the actual English courses that one would take during their first two years as a UCB student and simply states:

This major is offered by the College of Letters and Science (L&S). You must
complete either: (1) the L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Foreign
Language, and Quantitative Reasoning or (2) IGETC by the end of the spring term
that precedes fall enrollment at Berkeley.

Now, if I wish to complete these, would I need to speak to an adviser prior to course selection to find out what courses would fulfill these requirements? As for the IGETC, what is this? I have seen it several times on this board, here and there, however I would like to know what it is.

Thanks.
