What determines Regents?

What determines Regents at the UC's? Do they use a hollistic approach for the regents awards or do they base it off of numbers?

pureeeee luck

I know this may be a stupid question, but does regents correlate with admissions to private institutions?

From what I'm seeing, it seems not likely to be numbers-based at all. So, if it is indeed purely hollistic, does getting regents at Berkeley "bolster" your chances of getting admission into privates?

(Btw, I did not get regents)

anything that people are posting about regents selection is nothing but pure speculation, so i'm not going to add to the misinformation.

(for the record, i didn't get regents)

Did they send out regents rejections today or something?

What decides regents? Magic.

Actually, I'm 99% sure its holistic. I forgot whom it was, but a credible source told me the entire point of Regent's was to attract top talent that would otherwise be going to top privates.

At my interview, the interviewer seemed to stress the content of my essays a lot, asking me about what I had written, and repeatedly circling back. Some others reported similar interview experiences (possible sign?). All the usual stuff (GPA, SAT/ACT, EC's) matter, but at the higher levels the essays separate people more IMHO.

Guess I'm screwed then. Heh.

(I didnt even get a regents offer)

i disagree on holistic selection. my sister is plain jane and she got it. her grades were very high, sats and gpa, but her essay was mediocre.

her friend, who has higher stats than her, and extra curriculars, did not get a regents.

If you think admission to HYPS is a crapshoot, just look at selection for Regents at Berkeley. That, to me, is the epitome of 'crapshoot.'

Why do you say Cal Regents is even more of a crapshoot than HYPS? Do some of the winners clearly not deserve it or something?

It's that those who clearly deserve it don't get it, and then those who really don't seem that great do get it. I know people who get into HYPS but don't get Regents. I know people who were rejected from UCLA who got Regents. Of course, there are cases where they get Regents and also got into HYPS.

Basically, every combination is possible for those who get Regents. Just look at what shadow2 says--that isn't atypical at all for Regents.

They must just have some secret criteria or requirement or qualification they are looking for that we dont know about.

I agree that Regent's is less based on numbers--I've had quite a few B's and a few C's in high school, but I got Regent's while some of my 4.0 friends (in equally or more challenging classes) didn't.

How do I check if I got Regents or not?

I didn't get regents but got likely letters to stanford, yale, and columbia. i got accepted ea to caltech and rd to mit.

Very random process... Regent's really doesn't determine much. stupidkid, are you a CA resident?

no im not.

Out-of-state'rs don't find out about regents at Berkeley untill decision day, FYI.

Oh, I didn't know that. Hmm...thanks

^^ So do in-staters. Unless some people have found out already.
