Or what would be good? Just looking for some examples.

Study for SAT but not too much. You still have until Senior year, October

Summer before junior year: I went on a school trip to Europe, did some volunteer work helping disabled kids, and worked for 5 weeks as a receptionist.

Summer before senior year: I went on 2 week performance tour with choir, taught at a summer camp in Belize (mission trip), and did a bunch of college research.

Basically, just do what you think is productive and interesting. I went to visit colleges over my spring breaks, but summer might not be a bad time to do so if you understand that there won’t be very many students around. Summer reading would be a good idea too. Don’t forget to have fun, though. That’s the whole point of summer. =)

Guys: This is an actual question that Princeton asks on its application. I would not put down “goofing off” or “SAT practice.” Think about doing something useful (get a job?)

rising junior: SAT class (lame, I know), spoken word CD (slam poetry + music composition, recorded and sold), and LMTI camp (second year)

rising senior (planning): German classes (1 month), another spoken word CD :), and LMTI camp (third year, youth councelor)

I also want to find a job for this summer (so my parents will get me a car…), but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get one.

Edit: I’m not a super competitive candidate. If you look through some of the acceptance threads of schools you would like to apply to, you can get an idea of what some accepted students are doing over their summers.

Before Junior Year: I took about 120 hours of classes to become a certified EMT; I ran about 500 miles for cross country; I volunteered to play with a mentally challenged 13 year old once a week; I played USTA tennis tournaments

Before Senior year (I am a Junior so this is what I plan on doing): Cancer research at a hospital in NYC; run 500+ miles; volunteer for my town’s first aid squad every week; play USTA tournaments

Before junior year: nothing academic or useful, I know that’s sad.

Before senior year: I represented my legion post at Georgia Boys State which was held on the campus of Georgia Southern University.

Before junior year: nothing. I was naive and didn’t know all the crazy stuff students have to do to get into good colleges. sigh I should have been doing cancer research or saving small children in some third world country.

Before senior year: (i’m a junior now, so this is what i’m doing this summer): going to German for three weeks for an exchange program. Joining cross country. Volunteering at a cat shelter

Before junior year: spent 1 month hiking with my dad.

Before senior year: will go on a NOLS trip to Alaska, with a full scholarship.

internship + traveling + alcohol pretty much

Before Junior year(next year), I plan on doing…
- COSMOS
- self-study AP Chem or take it at the community college(if I can fit it in my summer)
- either a Roller Derby or Water Polo camp
- CARAVAN(my youth group’s weeklong mission trip)

Does that sound like a lot? There are also a few little things I want to do also, like studying a bit for the SAT and doing some community service. I want to make the most out of my summer, not lay around and do nothing like I have in the past.

Before Senior year: I have no idea.

My advice:
You should do whatever you want to do. I dunno, if you want to look good on colleges, find some prestigious enrichment/activity/leadership position that relates to your interests or do something academic that still relates to your interests and do a ton of community service. Or you could do a job. I’m sure that if you work hard and you are passionate about whatever you choose, it will show on your application AND you will grow as a person(remember it’s not all about looking good to colleges; make the best of your summer).

Last year: A ton of campaigning and the below
summer '09: Internships, counselor at a camp, jobs.

Summer classes at a local college, hanging out with friends. Both years.

My last summer before college is starting in about a month, and I have absolutely no idea what I should be doing, seeing as I am getting rejected by all the places I applied for internships. I can’t say I am really surprised, 17-18 year olds rearely get these in a third world country like mine, if your parents/peers are not well conected.

Before junior year: Duke TIP summer study to Italy, mission trip to Boston, traveling

Before senior year (planning): church camp, Duke TIP summer study at the campus, month-long volunteering stint, Yale College Admissions Conference (yay Questbridge!), possible all-expense paid college visit (currently nominated, will find out over the summer), become fluent in Italian (currently I know basic).

Work… Try working a job. It teaches you lessons that will serve you for the rest of your life.

Before Junior year I went to Berklee School of Music’s Five Week program. It was my last great hoorah with music (a passion I will be giving up as I enter college). This summer I will be interning in a lab (fingers crossed) and taking social justice courses as well as working with leadership initiatives!

Wow! Looks like I just got an internship at this great place which might be just perfect for mech engineering fans like moi.
Plus, I am preparing for some big community service stuff, but I have no idea if it is going to work out, as the plans might be too elaborate and I get sooo lazy.

Before junior year, I spent six weeks at Interlochen Arts Camp for creative writing.

Before senior year, I spent six weeks at my state’s Governor’s School for French.

Summer program at UCD and summer classes at CC. The summer program was probably one of the reasons I got into UCD and not colleges like UCSD and Cal Poly.
