What did you do to get into Exeter?

Well, I looked around at the stats of CC members and those who got into Phillips Exeter and they were phenomenal! Even the people who got a rejected had good stats. So if anyone is on right now and had an Exeter experience, please leave a short (or long) blurb about how you got in or your reflections. If you were wait-listed, did they ever respond? Thanks everyone, I really want to go to this school, but I heard that those who need financial aid are at a disadvantage, as well as asians, californians, and less athletically gifted/talented people (me).

I was rejected at Exeter. For a while, I thought Exeter was my first choice, but now I realize that Exeter wouldn’t have been good for me. It seems a little too nerdy, and too much of a “pressure cooker,” which isn’t good for someone whose a little too much of both of those things.

To be honest, I was slightly surprised by my rejection from Exeter. My interview there went phenomenally well, (my interviewer told my mom he would “get me into Exeter.”) and I thought I wrote decent essays. I sort of expected a waitlist.

Yep, you’re very right about all of this. This doesn’t mean that you’re not going to get into a good boarding school. Hell, you could go to an amazing boarding school and have the time of your life! It just might not be Andover or Exeter. If I were you, I would broaden my search to schools not commonly discussed on this forum, and apply to at least 5 schools. Use boardingschoolreview.com and the Hidden Gems thread to do so. Good luck.

Wow even after the interviewer promised you a spot. :open_mouth: I’ve been thinking of Deerfield, or maybe even Hotchkiss because of Harkness. They all seem extremely competitive though. And I still need financial aid. But I think I’ll look into some other schools now, thanks for the links. Btw, what school did you go to?

@ifax108
Has anything come through yet? Wishing you the best of luck, maybe something will open up.

@ExonianHoping
Deerfield and Hotchkiss are super competitive. I highly suggest you take a REALLY good look at the hidden gem page. I am very happy with the schools I have found that offer programs and are in certain locations that fit me. I still have a few top schools on my list (Andover, Exeter, and Taft), but I have a hard time taking them off my list. I was looking into Deerfield and really liked it, but I felt that having a room mate was important to the experience of boarding school. Otherwise, it’s a really awesome school.

Go to St. Paul’s. The entire hum program is run using harkness as its basis.

St. Paul’s is 100% boarding along with Episcopal High School (right outside of DC) and St. Andrews in Delaware.

Well I looked up some of the schools, and they all seem like the type I’m looking for. But do you know any schools which offer a kind of merit scholarship? Like to work for the boarding. Because I simply can’t afford 40,000 a year for high school. And I live on the west coast, so there’s also the cost of plane tickets. It seems my possibilities have just opened up. Thank you very much for the suggestions. I’ll still try for Exeter though. I doubt my chances are good enough, but it seems like the ideal school for me.

I think that Mercersburg Academy may have merit based scholarships but I’m not sure…

I know there is an all girls school that has a merit-based scholarship, anyone know what school it is?
Financial aid is still available for lesser-known schools, but probably more selective. I suggest going on boardingschoolreview and searching up all the schools your interested in and finding the average financial aid amount and things like that.

Some of the other schools I am really into are:
Brooks School (they offer science/medical internships for seniors, fifth form, at hospitals and stuff)
Episcopal High School (Washington D.C.)
Northfield Mount Hermon (I really like the whole farm idea)
Millbrook School (has a zoo)

These are the unique things about the school, but don’t think that is the only reason why I like the school.

Wow, thanks for all the replies, suggestions, and professional advice. So far Millbrook looks really good, and Mercersburg offers great scholarships. Episcoal’s honor code is way better than my public school’s, and St. Paul seems to offer a lot of appealing courses, though I wasn’t able to find the website. Thank you all so much for being so patient and suggesting such wonderful schools. They seem a little less competitive to get into, but amazing once you’re there. I’m really looking forward to going to one of these schools.

Why would it be hard to get into Exeter coming from California? Too many applicants from that state? Anyone know?

@ExonianHoping,
I’m going to my local public high school next year. I got WLed at four schools and rejected at two.

@overandover98,
Nothing yet. I think all the wait-lists I’m on have closed. I’m focusing more on next year’s application process right now. I requested viewbooks from 9 schools yesterday.

@redbluegoldgreen,
It would be hard, but certainly not impossible. It’s not like applying from China or South Korea. I think if you have a lot of other stuff going for you then you should be fine. I only worry about those people who have a lot of things out of their control going against them (location, race, and money).

Never say never, haha I cant believe I’m quoting Justin beiber. Really I’m an Asian applicant from California who needed near full financial aid and applied as an upper with a mediocre gpa and was admitted to Exeter. I was facing a long shot but was admitted so don’t give up hope

@andoverhopeful,
:smiley: Congratulations! Were you in a lot of ECs? Did you have to study a lot for the ssat? Or maybe you’re super smart and charismatic and that they begged you to go to Exeter! Are you at Andover now? Or did you decide to go to Exeter?

I had a couple of ecs but Im also an athletic recruit, both for college and exeter. I had a decent interview the interviewer said I was a fit but I didn’t really look into it. I had a 3.5 gpa so its not good. I got a 97 on the ssat and 210 or something like that on my PSAT.

I also applied to Andover and choate and was accepted at all 3 but I like Exeter the most and the financial aid packet was more than generous

Oh I see… Interesting. Thank you for the inspiration! So I guess that means you’ll be playing on the team?

I’m an andover girl, class of 2012!
Here’s a little blip on what i think. i’m a tourguide, and i get the question all the time! hope it helps. write any questions or comments on the guestbook at the bottom, and I’ll answer as soon as i can. good luck!
