What did you major in as an undergraduate if you are now getting an MBA?

I will be choosing what to major in soon for college, and wanted to ask what MBA students typically majored in for undergraduate studies. Is majoring in business as an undergraduate redundant if you plan to go to a business school for graduate school? I know some people who have taken engineering before heading over to graduate school to try to get an MBA. Is it better to major in something else other than business if you think you will end up in a business school for graduate school?

I have also heard that it depends on your area of specialty--if you are doing management, it would help to have a college degree in some other area so you can better know how to manage your people (for example, if you were a manager in a biotech company, it would help to have a biotech degree, or something along those lines). But, for another specialty like finance, it would be good to have a background in finance already as an undergraduate. Is this true or is it completely off? It would help if any current MBA students could share their experiences and stories.

Thanks!!

You are 8 years from starting MBA school if you are shooting for a top program. I recommend you find what interests you, get leadership experience and excel.

I personally majored in engineering, but I work in finance and am working an MBA. There are different concentrations of MBAs and lots of them so that really depends on what you feel is best for your career at that point. My program has students from all different backgrounds: Art, Music, IT, Engineering, Business, Econ, Sciences, Sports, Entrepreneurs, Accounting, Finance, Journalism, Media and that’s just off the top of my head. You can chose your concentration. My school allows you to pick three concentrations and I chose operations, MIS, and entrepreneurship and some electives in non-profit management. So you should study what interests you the most in college and not worry about an MBA. You won’t need an MBA in many cases if you excel at what you do, you will be noticed regardless. Just study what you want to the most.
