What do I need to get into the University of Chicago (for Economics)

What sort of GPA, SAT score, and ACT score do people who get admitted usually have?

If you don't have a great GPA could you still be admitted if you did extremely well with the SAT/ACT?

Do they prefer applicants to take the SAT or ACT, or it doesn't matter?

Do I need to do any AP tests or SAT subject tests? If so, which?

If they don't require AP/SAT subject tests would it still look good if I did them anyways?

What classes in high school (apart from Economics) are most recommended?

I'm feeling pretty anxious cause I'm in 11th grade but I don't know much about the whole college admissions process and everything..

The middle 50% of SAT scores is 1400–1530. For the ACT, it is 30–34. Keep in mind that 25% of accepted students scored either above or below the range. UChicago also does not consider the writing section on the SAT. It’s hard to quantify what GPA you need since every high school is different. As long as it is strong in the context of your school and your curriculum, you should be fine.

Yeah, you can.

It doesn’t matter

UChicago doesn’t require any subject tests. But if you do take them, it can only help. Also, since you’re looking into UChicago, many of its peer institutions do require subject tests so you’ll be taking them anyways.

Yes, it would look good to take AP/SAT Subject Tests. Take many APs to demonstrate that you’ve taken a rigorous curriculum.

Make sure you take: 4 years of English, 4 years of Math (up to Calculus preferably), 3+ years of Science (Bio, Chem, and Physics), 3+ years of Humanities (World History, US History, Psychology, Econ etc.), 4 years of the same Language if possible.
Again, take AP/Honors courses whenever they are available. Take a strong courseload. Since you’re interested in Econ, I recommend taking AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics.

Hope this helps.

These are the middle 50% scores of last year UChicago’s incoming freshman class:

SAT Critical Reading: 700 - 780
SAT Math: 700 - 780
SAT Writing: 690 - 770

ACT Composite: 30 - 34

There is no minimum GPA (here, the higher the better). Here’s the GPAs of the incoming freshman clas:

85% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
11% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
3% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
1% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24

Here you should realize that the GPA is the most important data for admission; again – the higher the better. Is it possible to be admitted with a low GPA? Yes, but it’s harder than being admitted with a high GPA and a not “top” SAT/ACT score.

Doesn’t matter.

Bottom line is: take the most rigorous classes and AP tests that you are offered [credit is offered for AP exams]. About Subject Tests, UChicago doesn’t request them.

AP is accepted. Subject Tests aren’t required and most probably won’t affect your chances.

In your case, the most rigorous the better. This is the basic curriculum though:

[ul]
[]4 years of English
[]3–4 years of math
[]3–4 years of laboratory sciences
[]3 or more years of social sciences
[li]Study of a foreign language[/li][/ul]

Let me know if I can be of further help.

Looks like your questions have already been answered. If any have any other questions, feel free to PM me. I’m going to UChicago (class of '15).
