I guess I'm sort of nervous on what to wear at my interview, and I basically just want to verify if everyone is basically wearing something like what I am.
I'm wearing a white polo with a vest, blazer, trousers, dress shoes and a tie. Am I overdoing it?
I'm applying to Andover, Exeter, Lawrenceville, Hotchkiss, and Deerfield for 2010-2011 as a freshmen, I don't know if that makes a difference

well you don’t need the blazer or the vest
I suggest wearing just a tie and long kakkis
NO ATHLETIC SOCKS
Get a button down shirt and slip a tie on it and you will be fine

I am going to disagree with golfkid. You should absolutely wear the blazer although I would agree that the vest is slightly overkill. By polo I assume you mean white button down, if so then you are fine.

Yeah, thats what I mean by a polo. And by the way, my dad already bought the vest and he wants me to wear it and I really see nothing wrong with it so I’m going to wear it.
Also, Hockeykid and golfkid, are you both applying 2010-2011 for freshman year?

The vest will make you stand out, but in an overkill way. Stick to the basics: blazer, button down shirt, a real tie (not a clip on), a pair of gray flannels or khakis, dark blue socks and some loafers or lace ups.

Don’t over analyze it. Wear what makes you comfortable. Everyone knows you are on a tour, so you are not going undercover, regardless of what you wear.

Having said that… I agree no white socks, no clip on ties, and Deerfield and Lawrenceville tend to be more preppy, Exeter the least and Andover in between.

At every school that we have visited, regardless of the dress code, almost all visiting boys were wearing the exact same thing - almost like a uniform: khakis, brown shoes, button down, tie and navy blue sports coat. At schools with a casual dress code, I told my son that he could ditch the coat and tie and wear one of his darker button downs and he said, “No, I’ll stick with the coat and tie. I like it.” It was a good call on his part. He looked sharp and felt confident. We did see one boy at a school with a formal dress code wearing a very casual pullover with khakis. He looked self-conscious.

Under no circumstances wear a vest. Also, if you dont wear a blazer, dont wear a tie. Dont wear sneakers with pants (ok with jeans if youre going super casual). the most important thing is to be neat

I think folks are overthinking this. As long as you are neat and presentable, don’t worry abut it. They take kids from all walks of life so you don’t need to wear the blue blazer/khaki uniform unless that is who you are.

A vest is fine.
