Such as Thanksgiving, spring break, etc. Do kids stay in dorms and just each at local restaurants?
Based on son’s experience, must students go home. He stayed over one Thanksgiving and it was pretty dead. That was fine for him though because he got to catch up on sleep and study for finals.
I don’t remember what he did for food. Each suite has a decent size fridge and microwave and there are plenty of restaurants, so feeding yourself shouldn’t be too hard.
Well, if my son attends, he’d be across the country, so going home would not be an option. Thanks for the info.
You’d want to make sure he’s in a dorm that doesn’t shut down for those breaks. I’m not sure of UAH policy on that…
My son flew home for fall and spring break, so I’m not sure what is open. We are way too far too far (ten hours) to drive for those breaks. It sounds like you might be a lot farther away. He stayed during Thanksgiving. His dorm was open for Thanksgiving and if he wanted he could have ordered food from the cafeteria with the RA’s that stayed for break. I can’t remember if the Beville was open for food, but I believe all the options were closed? He said it was very quiet on campus! He decided to just buy cold cuts, cereal and frozen dinners to eat for those days. He doesn’t have a car on campus, so he thought that would be the best for him.
I guess that’s something we need to check into. Should he go there, we certainly could not afford to fly him home for every break, nor would he want to fly that many times. Bummer.
@sbjdorlo yes, residence halls stay open for the breaks! Should students need to stay on-campus for major breaks, such as Winter Break, they may be temporarily moved to another residence hall if theirs is scheduled for routine maintenance.
Thank you!
My son has been on campus for most of his breaks. He lives in the fraternity house, so he can come and go as he pleases. This past Thanksgiving was a little rough. He was ill with a sinus infection, so he really did not want to go anywhere. Fortunately, one of his friends lives locally, and she brought him a full turkey dinner with the trimmings. The following day, he headed to Tuscaloosa to meet up with his Bama-grad brother, and the two attended the Iron Bowl. That said, sometimes, students will go home with friends or roommates. My older son did that for three years while at Bama. His roommate’s family was from near Birmingham, and he always went to their home for turkey.
