OK, only one of my teachers (out of six) has actually put up what textbook we will need for the class.
Should I preorder with the UF bookstore with this one book and bother my teachers about posting their requirements for class on the site, still trying to buy the books before classes start?
Or should I just chill and wait until classes start to begin the purchasing? What do people typically do and what would be your recommendation(s)?

For my chemistry and calc class I contacted the chemistry and math departments and the secretary that answered the phone was able to tell which books I needed.

My daughter had planned do this herself at school (not preorder). She will probably go to the first class then head to the bookstore to buy whichever books she needs. Does anyone know if they keep a good stock of necess. textbooks on hand at the bookstore or if she really should preorder them (especially the economics and calculus textbooks) to ensure that there is a copy waiting for her? She is not going to bother shopping around (for prices) since she gets a books stipend ($300/semester through bright futures). Does anyone know if she is able to use any leftover bright futures textbook money for other school supplies or even school logo clothing at the bookstore (or is it only applicable to textbooks)?

I almost certain that anything you save on books under the $300 you can keep and use on other items.

wait until classes start

Went on the link to textbook website yesterday. Saw that my daughter's bright futures deferrment is now usable and has been increased to $500 for the semester!!! Good thing, since her textbooks will cost us $417. (more after we locate one more book).

I am curious how you were able to get $500 for books from Bright Futures for Fall semester. The FAS book allowance says $300 per semester. Is there some way to get additional money? Any hints you can share are much appreciated because as you say, $300 is not enough to cover new books, for sure. We were barely able to get used books for that amount.

THANKS!

Wait until you've been to the class to buy books! (unless you ABSOLUTELY know you'll take that course!) I've had so many professors put books up as "required,” only to then inform you on the first day of class that they will never get used. A lot of times the teacher can tell you the best place to buy the book (if it’s not a commonly used book). It's also very common to drop classes during add/drop because you find out that you don't really like the professor or his/her teaching style (and then you’re stuck with $150 worth of books).
BTW the UF bookstore is soo much more expensive than the other bookstores on everything from books, notebooks, and t-shirts. The UF bookstore will pay more during buy back, however, if you purchased your books originally from them.

Cybermom- have your child log onto ISIS, then click on My textbooks in the lower left side, When the textbook page comes up, read the paragraphs on top. My daughter's used to say that she had a $300 deferment but now it says $500 (the site has changed since last week). I am not complaining.

just a quick note to you parents who are saying your book money has been increased.. i called a guy a while back at the bookstore to ask if he knew how much i would get for bright futures and such and he said $300 but that once the bookstore accounts get setup you will have a limit. the $500 number you see is how much you can defer to your student aid. It doesnt mean you have that much book money, just that they are gonna let you overspend because you have book money at all. You will get the bill for anything your student aid doesnt pay for (possibly that extra $200 if you dont have any other scholarships or anything)

:)

PinkiePinkster -- Thanks for the clarification.

no problem!

Im just wondering now, if i have to call and get them to change mine because i haven another scholarship that also gives me book money.... hmm.
